We believe that mathematics should be taught using a consistent vocabulary. Students’ mathematical vocabulary learning is vital for the development of mathematical proficiency. The Pennsylvania Department of Education recommends mathematical vocabulary for each grade level. You can access the pdesas website by clicking HERE.
The following list of mathematical terms is recommended for Third Grade. Teachers introduce this math vocabulary to students by using these words orally alongside familiar language to build students’ familiarity with the language of math.
Introduce the vocabulary word or “concept word” to the students
Teach them how to use the word map by putting the concept word in the center box.
Ask students to suggest words and/or phrases to put in other boxes (around the concept word) which answer the following questions: “What is it?”, “What is it like?”, “What are some examples?”
Encourage students to use other words, pictures and examples to help illustrate the concept word.
