Professional Hair Color Patch Test instructions
To conduct a professional hair color patch test, apply a small amount of the mixed hair color (color and developer) to a clean, dry area of skin, like behind the ear or on the inner elbow, and leave it for 24 hours, observing for any signs of irritation.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of the process:
PREPARATION
1. Choose a Test Area: Select a small area of skin: we recommend behind the ear using Aveda behind the right ear and ShadesEQ behind the left ear. The inner elbow can also be used but it is easier for it to be rubbed or washed off during the observation period.
2. Clean the Area: Wash the test area gently with mild soap and water, and pat dry with a clean towel.
3. Mix the Hair Color: Mix the hair color and developer according to the product instructions. Mix approximately a dime size amount. If you know the color you plan to use – mix that. If not, we recommend the following for Aveda and Redken:
AVEDA
Full Spectrum Permanent: • 4G 6N + 1G DARK R/0 + 1G DARK B/G 20VOL
Full Spectrum Deep: • 4G 6N + 1G DARK O/R + 1G DARK GR/B 20VOL
Demi+: • 4G 6N + 1G DARK COPPER + 1G DARK INTENSE ASH + 10VOL Crème
REDKEN
ShadesEQ use the approximate level you plan to use. If unsure – use a 6 level for the test + developer
APPLICATION
1. Apply a Small Amount: Using a cotton swab or the corner of a color brush, apply a small amount of the mixed hair color to the chosen test area.
2. Allow to Dry: Let the hair color dry completely on the skin.
3. Leave Uncovered: Do not wash, cover, or touch the test area for the duration of the test.
OBSERVATION
1. Wait 24 Hours: Leave the hair color on the skin for 24 hours to allow for any potential reactions to develop.
2. Monitor for Reactions: Client should observe the test area for any signs of irritation, such as redness, itching, swelling, or burning.
3. If Irritation Occurs: If any signs of irritation develop, instruct the client to call us asap. Do not proceed with the hair coloring process. Client should consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional to determine if hair color is a safe option for them.
4. If No Irritation Occurs: If no signs of irritation are observed after 24 hours, you can proceed with the hair coloring service.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
1. Follow Product Instructions: Always follow the specific instructions provided by the hair color manufacturer for performing a patch test.
2. Inform Your Client: Explain the importance of the patch test to your client and ensure they understand the process and what to look for.
3. Document the Test: Keep a record of the patch test results, including the date, time, and any observations made.
