JCL ARCHIVE – AUDIO LOG 0420
Date: 2017-03-28
Location: Outside JCL Administrative Facility – United States (Exact Location Redacted)
Subject: Cipher Widow – Field Operation Log

[Tape begins. The quiet hum of a recorder turning on. Faint outdoor noise—cars passing in the distance, wind brushing lightly against the microphone.]

Cipher Widow (quietly):
Testing… alright. It’s on.

This is… log four.

I’m currently outside a JCL administrative complex. Midday. Employee break rotations are starting, which means the staff will be coming outside in waves for coffee, smoke breaks, and whatever else they do to survive their shifts.

Today’s objective is simple.

Credential acquisition.

[She exhales slowly.]

I really don’t like this part of the job.

But sometimes information doesn’t sit inside a locked file cabinet—it sits in someone’s pocket.

And the only way to reach it… is to get close.

[Soft fabric rustles as she adjusts something.]

Disguise check: JCL receptionist uniform. Borrowed badge. Temporary ID tag.

Hair done differently.

Voice… friendlier than usual.

[A small, slightly nervous laugh.]

Let’s hope it works.

[Footsteps begin. They sound lighter now, more casual.]

[The sound of a door opening. Outdoor chatter nearby.]

Cipher Widow (now using a sweet, warm tone):
Oh—sorry!

I didn’t mean to bump into you.

JCL Agent:
Oh—no, you’re fine. I didn’t even see you there.

Cipher Widow:
First week on desk duty and I’m already running people over in the courtyard. Great start, right?

JCL Agent (chuckles):
Yeah, that’ll get you promoted real fast.

Cipher Widow:
You’re on break too?

JCL Agent:
Yeah. Needed some air.

Cipher Widow:
Same. Those front desks feel like cages after a few hours.

[They begin walking slowly.]

JCL Agent:
I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.

Cipher Widow:
New transfer. Administration.

Lots of paperwork… lots of bored agents walking by pretending they’re busy.

JCL Agent:
Yeah, that sounds about right.

[She laughs softly.]

Cipher Widow:
You look like you could use better company on your break though.

Maybe a drive? Coffee somewhere?

My shift doesn’t start again for another hour.

[A pause. The agent sounds slightly surprised.]

JCL Agent:
Uh—yeah… sure. I mean… yeah.

Cipher Widow:
Great.

[The recorder suddenly clicks.]

[Recording Paused]

[Tape resumes. The sound of a car engine idling. The interior acoustics of a vehicle. Low music from a radio plays faintly in the background.]

JCL Agent:
So yeah, I’ve been working security division for about five—

[Suddenly a sharp THUD interrupts him.]

[The radio crackles slightly as the agent slumps over.]

Cipher Widow (voice completely changed, calm and focused):
…Sorry.

[She exhales slowly.]

I really am.

[Fabric rustles as she quickly searches through pockets.]

Badge… phone… access card…

Good.

[The car door opens quickly.]

Cipher Widow:
You’ll wake up in about ten minutes.

No permanent damage.

Just a very confusing afternoon… and probably a termination notice.

[A pause. Her voice softens briefly.]

I hope you find a better job after this.

[Footsteps quickly move away from the car.]

Wind rushes louder against the recorder as she starts running.

Cipher Widow (breathing slightly heavier):
Credentials secured.

Extraction point two blocks north.

End log.

[Click. Tape ends.]
