JCL ARCHIVE – AUDIO LOG 0417
Date: 2017-03-18
Location: Black Ledger Investigation Office – Secure Floor
Subject: Cipher Widow

[Tape begins. Loud shuffling of papers. Multiple voices in the background. Phones ringing faintly. The room sounds tense and busy.]

Cipher Widow:
No—no, that’s not what I asked for. I need everything from 1992, not just the public archive summaries. Internal reports, field logs, medical documents, funding transfers—anything tied to the JCL’s operations that year.

[A chair rolls across the floor.]

And someone get me the satellite files from their West Division facility. The ones that “don’t exist.” If they’re scrubbed, I want the pre-scrub versions.

[Papers slap onto a desk.]

Cipher Widow (sharper):
Move, people. We’ve been digging for three months and we still have nothing solid. The JCL didn’t bury something in 1992 just for fun. Whatever that project was, it was big enough to scare them.

[A detective in the background mutters something indistinct.]

Cipher Widow:
No, don’t tell me it’s classified. I know it’s classified. That’s the whole point of this investigation.

[A long pause. Her voice grows louder, clearly stressed.]

You—yes, you. Run the personnel lists again. Cross-reference anyone who disappeared, transferred suddenly, or died that year. If they vanished right after the project ended, that’s not coincidence.

And for the love of God, somebody pull the financial records from the corporation that funds them. Money leaves footprints.

[Another pause. The room grows quieter.]

Cipher Widow (voice tight):
We are not dropping this. Do you understand me? That file didn’t get buried under five layers of secrecy unless someone was afraid of it coming out.

[A chair creaks as she sits down.]

…Alright.

[Her tone softens slightly.]

Look, I—
I’m sorry if I’m coming down hard on everyone. I know I sound like a tyrant right now.

[Small sigh.]

I’m just…under a lot of pressure to figure this out. If the JCL covered something up in 1992, and it’s still talked about today, we can’t just ignore it.

You’re all doing good work. Really. I appreciate it.

[Several footsteps as detectives disperse around the office.]

Good. Let’s get back to it.

[A few seconds pass. The room becomes quieter. Papers shuffle again.]

Cipher Widow (muttering to herself):
Okay… timeline first… then cross-reference the funding channels…

[A faint mechanical clicking sound suddenly becomes noticeable.]

…Wait.

[Silence.]

Cipher Widow (quietly):
Is that…?

[A chair slides back quickly.]

Oh.

Oh no.

[She walks across the room. The recorder is picked up.]

Cipher Widow (whispering, surprised):
I… pressed record.

This whole thing’s been recording.

[A brief stunned pause.]

Well.

That’s… embarrassing.

[She exhales quietly, regaining composure.]

You know what… maybe I’ll keep it.

Might be useful later.

Documentation and all that.

[Soft click.]

End of recording.
