A health and safety management system brings together the various initiatives, assessments, procedures, control measures, and monitoring actions that are in place.
Gorge Road School provides the resources needed to comply with our health and safety obligations. This includes:
· Allocating specific responsibilities for health and safety:
o The board and the principal are ‘officers’ and are ultimately responsible for health and safety.
o The principal is responsible for implementing our health and safety system.
o The health and safety committee is responsible for addressing health and safety issues, supporting communication between workers and the board, and helping ensure that the school complies with its obligations.
o Workers are responsible for their own health and safety and that of others, and following policy and procedures.
· Making financial resources available, via the board, to implement our health and safety management system, including measures to eliminate or minimise risks as far as is reasonably practicable.
· Having a health and safety committee or delegated person (usually the principal) to facilitate communication between management and workers.
Planning and implementation
Gorge Road School systematically and regularly identifies hazards and assesses risks. Where a hazard cannot be eliminated, we minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
Performance measurement
Gorge Road School measures our performance in a number of ways, including:
regular communication with staff through our health and safety committee or delegated person
regular reports to the board on accidents and incidents, and on any work-related illness suffered by staff
regular checks that workers are following health and safety procedures.
Performance review
Health and safety performance at Gorge Road School is measured by regular audits and include:
abuse recognition and reporting (as needed)
emergency procedure posters
risk management (hazard register)
reporting of moderate illness and injury
teacher registration and police vetting, and vetting of non-teachers.
