HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY
The Gorge Road School Board of Trustees is committed to meet our legal requirements, to ensure the safety of students, employees, and visitors by providing and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace as well as providing the information, training and supervision needed to ensure the health and safety of all, whether at school or away from school on school business. The board is responsible for ensuring health and safety procedures are developed and implemented.
The following procedures allow us to carry out the aims of our health and safety policy:
The school has Health and Safety representation and annually checks the school's health and safety practices.
Employees and other workers at the school will take reasonable care to:
· co-operate with school health and safety procedures
· comply with the health and safety legislation
· ensure their own safety at work
· promote and contribute to a safety conscious culture at the school.
Staff is consulted in the development and review of health and safety procedures. The staff understands and implements all health and safety procedures, and is kept trained and supervised in their implementation. Induction of new staff will include health and safety expectations and measures, as well as sufficient training in the use of school-based equipment and machinery. Staff are expected to be active in hazard identification and risk management.
The school’s internal procedures for health and safety include guidelines for:
· playground supervision and sun protection
· promote healthy food and nutrition for all students.
· plant and machinery safety
· storage and use of hazardous substances
· administering medication, communicable diseases, handling of blood
· visitors to the school, including parents' access to students during school hours
· behaviour management strategies and stand-down, suspension, or exclusion procedures.
· smoke-free & vape-free environment
· EOTC activities, including risk management.
· child protection, and training staff in recognising and reporting abuse.
· bullying & cybersafety procedures to guide use of the internet and other digital devices and equipment.
The school maintains
· a hazard register. Any identified hazard is eliminated, isolated, or minimised. The school assures the board of this ongoing process.
· an accident register in the first aid room. The principal reports to the Board when a notifiable incident occurs.
· up-to-date emergency plans and evacuation procedures.
