5th Grade Computer Class Week 1

Hi Folks! I hope everyone is happy and healthy during this odd turn of events. I will be emailing you lesson plans each week that that can be split into two weekly sections taking around 20-30 minutes to complete.

For 5th Grade I’d like to continue with our keyboarding practice. Your student should know how to log into their TYPING.COM account. The user ID is most likely the first letter of their first name followed by their last name. No capital letters and no spaces (ex: jbarlowe) and the password is Password1 with a capital P. Please have them practice at LEAST 40 minutes over the course of this week on the website’s lessons. Please avoid just letting them play the typing games. Their typing scores do affect their grade next year so this is important.

It is my expectation that students will be typing 15 words per minute with at least 90% accuracy by the end of the school year. Some of our 5th graders have been struggling a bit with that this year so I’m hoping that practice under a parent’s watchful eye can help polish up the process. If they can show you that they already can achieve this based on their TEST SCORES, then they are free to play the typing games. Students are not to be looking at their fingers while they type and since you most likely don’t have the keyboard covers that we use in class, any improvisational tool (a paper towel to cover hands, tape over the keys, etc.) will be greatly beneficial in this process!

Please have your student show you their testing progress over the course of this year. You should be able to see the results of their typing tests and get a general idea of how they are doing as well as who needs additional practice. We will continue to have typing tests about once a month to keep track of where your child is in their practice.

Thanks for your help with this process. We all know that typing skills will greatly assist in future school projects so this is an essential tool that we want the kids to have at their disposal!

Stay safe friends!
