Vidalia Advance

HISTORY

Newspaper

  • 1903: The Vidalia Advance is established by the Advance Publishing Company with Dr. E. Morgan, J. A. Mobley, and J. H. Breedlove as editors. The paper circulated weekly and supported the Democratic Party, traits which do not change throughout the paper's run.

  • 1905: E. C. J. Dickens, also owner of the monthly Georgia Baptist (Vidalia), is editor and majority shareholder. Dickens identified himself as a "reform Democrat" and supported Populist Thomas E. Watson.

  • 1911: J. Kelley Simmons, editor and publisher.

  • 1913: A. B. Cargile replaces J. Kelley Simmons, and the Advance becomes Vidalia's sole newspaper under his management.

  • 1915: J. W. McWhorter replaces Cargile as managing editor and publisher.

  • 1921: N. C. Napier takes over the Advance and leads the paper into the mid-20th century.

  • From Georgia Historic Newspapers: "The paper merged with the Lyons Progress in 1991 and was renamed the Advance-Progress. That same year, the publication became Toombs County's legal organ and the Advance continues to serve Toombs, Montgomery, and Lyons counties today."
