HISTORY

Newspaper

  • June 20, 1878: the Dublin Post is established by J. W. Peacock & Company; R. L. Hicks and J. A. Peacock served as editors.

  • 1894: Stock company headed by D. J. Thaxton acquires the Dublin Post and retitles it as the Dublin Courier. The four-page paper circulated weekly and is listed as "Democratic" in N. W. Ayer and Son's 1895 Newspaper Annual.

  • September 1895: the Dispatch Publishing Company publishes the first issue of the Dublin Dispatch with J. A. Peacock as editor-in-chief. Like the Dublin Courier, the Dispatch circulated weekly on four pages; both newspapers carried a subscription cost of one dollar and supported the Democratic Party. A, P. Hilton succeeded Peacock as managing editor in 1897, and Ira S. Chappell served as associate editor.

  • October 1897: E. W. Morcock and A. B. Pierce purchase the Dublin Courier from a retiring D. J. Thaxton.

  • 1898: the Dublin Courier lists as a Populist newspaper.

  • December 1899: H. M. Stanley, V. L. Stanley, E. W. Morcock, and A. P. Hilton consolidate the Dublin Courier and Dublin Dispatch into the Dublin Courier-Dispatch. The newly-merged title circulated eight-pages semiweekly.

  • 1913 - 1914: The Dublin Courier-Dispatch absorbs the Laurens County Herald to become the Dublin Courier-Herald and Dispatch, which circulated daily and weekly editions. Organized under the Courier Herald Publishing Company, Frank Lawson served as managing editor.

  • June 30, 1929: The paper publishes as the Dublin Courier-Herald Dispatch and Press following a merger with the Dublin Press.

  • October 19, 1942: The title is shortened to Dublin Courier-Herald

  • June 1, 1981 - present: Now known as the Courier-Herald, the newspaper continues to serve as Laurens County's legal organ.
