Grave is de meest belegerde vestingstad van Nederland. De sporen van de veldslagen die zijn gevoerd in en rond Grave, maar ook hoe de bewoners van de stad zich verweerden tegen de vijandelijke legers, zijn nog steeds zichtbaar in de historische binnenstad van Grave. Het begon in de veertiende eeuw, toen waren er rond Grave al muren en poorten gebouwd. In de loop der eeuwen groeiden uit dit prille begin een imposante vesting. Deze bood veiligheid, maar sloot de stad ook op. Uitbreidingen waren met de stenen omheining zo goed als onmogelijk geworden.

In de zestiende eeuw werd de vesting nog eens verbeterd met stevige wallen, diepe grachten en hoge geschutstorens en kwamen er kunstmatige eilanden (ravelijnen) in de grachten om de vijanden te weren. In de achttiende eeuw kwamen er barakken voor de soldaten. Deze werden in de negentiende eeuw verbeterd en uitgebreid met een bomvrije kazerne en een kazerne annex garnizoensziekenhuis. Dit alles wordt ontmanteld nadat in 1874 bij wet was geregeld dat de vestingen in Nederland moesten verdwijnen.

Ondanks de vele gevechten en belegeringen die Grave heeft moeten doorstaan is er veel bewaard gebleven. Inwoners van Grave zijn terecht trots op de rijke historie en de overlevingskracht van hun voorouders. Het is niet voor niets dat u, na veel herstelwerkzaamheden, de eerste contouren van de oude vesting ziet herrijzen!

Grave is the most besieged fortress city in the Netherlands. The traces of the battles that were fought in and around Grave, but also how the inhabitants of the city resisted the enemy armies, are still visible in the historic center of Grave. It all started in the fourteenth century when walls and gates were constructed around Grave. Over the centuries, an imposing fortress grew from these early beginnings. It offered safety, but also locked up the city. Expansions had become virtually impossible with the stone enclosure.

In the sixteenth century the fortress was further improved with sturdy walls, deep moats and high artillery towers and artificial islands (ravelins) were constructed in the moats to keep out the enemies. In the eighteenth century barracks were built for the soldiers. These were improved in the nineteenth century and expanded to include shellproof barracks and a barracks cum garrison hospital. All this was dismantled after a law was passed in 1874 that the fortifications in the Netherlands had to disappear.

Despite the many battles and sieges Grave has had to endure, much has been preserved. Residents of Grave are rightly proud of its rich history and the survival skills of their ancestors. It is not for nothing that, after much repair work, you can see the first contours of the old fortress rising again!
