Groningen (NL) that fascinates

Groningen is de grootste stad van noordelijk Nederland. Als Hanzestad maakte Groningen deel uit van het Noord-Duitse handelsnetwerk, maar het werd later vooral een regionaal marktcentrum. Hierna ontwikkelde Groningen zich geleidelijk tot een invloedrijk machtscentrum. De stad kon gedurende de 15e eeuw, op het hoogtepunt van zijn macht, feitelijk als een stadstaat worden beschouwd.

Na de Franse tijd verloor de stad haar overheersende positie in de provincie. Tegenwoordig is Groningen een stad met gevarieerde handel en industrie. Groningen is ook een studentenstad met ruim 60.000 studenten, van wie bijna 35.000 in de stad wonen (2018).

Groningen is the largest city in the northern part of the Netherlands. As a Hanseatic city, Groningen was part of the North German trade network, but later became mainly a regional market center. After this, Groningen gradually developed into an influential center of power. The city could actually be considered a city-state during the 15th century, at the height of its power.

After the French period, the city lost its predominant position in the province. Nowadays Groningen is a city with varied trade and industry. Groningen is also a student city with over 60,000 students, of whom almost 35,000 live in the city (2018).
