Waar Maas en Waal tezamenvloeit
en Gorcum rijst van ver,
daar ligt het stadje Woudrichem,
gastvrij sinds eeuwen her.

Where Maas and Waal unite
and Gorcum rises from afar,
there lies the town of Woudrichem
known for its hospitability for ages uncount.

Woudrichem is strategisch gelegen aan de samenvloeiing van Maas en Waal, op de kruising van 3 provincies. Het Land van Altena, waar Woudrichem toe behoort, hoorde vanaf 1322 bij het Graafschap Holland. Pas in 1815 werd het bij de nieuwe provincie Noord-Brabant ingedeeld. Woudrichem kreeg stadsrechten in 1356. In dat jaar werd ook de grafelijke riviertol van Niemandsvriend van Sliedrecht naar Woudrichem verplaatst. Een paar jaar later kreeg de stad ook visserijrechten, en kwam tot bloei. De Martinuskerk en stadsmuren stammen uit deze tijd.

In 1420 werd de tol verplaatst naar Gorinchem. Deze gebeurtenis, de Sint Elizabethsvloed van 1421 en de vele militaire conflicten waar het stadje vanwege zijn ligging bij betrokken was, zorgden voor het verval van de stad. De vele belegeringen hebben in Woudrichem hun sporen nagelaten. In 1573 staken de Geuzen de stad in brand. Ze beschouwden haar als onverdedigbaar. Er werd daarna een nieuwe stadswal opgeworpen, die een kleiner gebied beschermde dan de oude stadsmuur had gedaan. Deze stadswal is de vestingmuur die nog altijd het centrum omsluit.

In 1814 werd Woudrichem onderdeel van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Er mocht vanaf die tijd niet meer in het omringende land gebouwd worden. Pas in 1955 werd de vesting opgeheven en zijn er nieuwe woonwijken rondom het stadje aangelegd. De historische stadskern is een beschermd stadsgezicht.

Edith en ik hebben in november 2020 in Woudrichem een stadswandeling + fotoshoot gedaan Het stadje heeft grote indruk op ons gemaakt. We kijken er met veel plezier op terug.

De expositie voert u door de oude straatjes, langs de historische haven, de stadspoorten en de stadswallen. U ziet veel historische panden.

Woudrichem is strategically located at the confluence of the rivers Maas and Waal, at the intersection of 3 provinces. The Land of Altena, to which Woudrichem belongs, belonged to the County of Holland from 1322. It was not assigned to the new province of Noord-Brabant until 1815. Woudrichem was granted city rights in 1356. In that year also the count's river toll of No Man's Friend was moved from Sliedrecht to Woudrichem. A few years later, the town also got fishing rights, and flourished. The Martinus church and city walls date from this time.

In 1420 the toll was moved to Gorinchem. This event, the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421 and the many military conflicts in which the town was involved due to its location, caused the town to decline. The many sieges have left their traces in Woudrichem. In 1573, the Geuzen set fire to the city. They considered her indefensible. A new city wall was then erected, protecting a smaller area than the old city wall had done. This city wall is the fortress wall that still encloses the center.

In 1814 Woudrichem became part of the New Dutch Waterline, a typical Dutch defense invention. From that time on it was no longer allowed to build in the surrounding land. The fortress was only closed in 1955 and new residential areas were built around the town. The historic city center is a protected cityscape.

Edith and I did a city walk photoshoot in Woudrichem in November 2020. We found the town very impressive and we look back on it with great pleasure.
