Elegance Bratton's directorial debut "The Inspection" is a boot camp movie that follows the standard arc of such films: a troubled young person enlists (or is drafted), has a rough training period in which he is targeted with cruel special attention by a drill instructor, considers quitting, but eventually decides to stick it out and make it to graduation, harnessing reserves of strength he didn't know he had.
But this version of the tale is based on the filmmaker's own experiences as a gay Black man who joined the Marines after the 9/11 attacks. That means that even though you're watching variations of the usual story beats, they have different meanings, and inspire more conflicted feelings.
Ellis French (Jeremy Pope), a young gay Black man, is already battle-hardened by a decade of homelessness and the rejection of his mother Inez (Gabrielle Union, phenomenal) when he decides to join the US Marines. But the daily fight to make it through basic training, with the institutionally sanctioned bullying that kicks up a gear once his sexuality becomes known, is a challenge even for Ellis’s finely tuned survival instincts.
This well-acted outsider’s-eye view of the inner workings of the US armed forces is fiercely candid, in its condemnation of the brutality that is enmeshed in the training programme, and in its celebration of the bonds and brotherhood that grow between fellow cadets. The confidence that director Elegance Bratton shows in navigating this closed world comes from his own experience. Before he was the director of films such as Pier Kids, an award-winning documentary about the homeless LGBTQ+ community in New York, he too escaped a life on the street by serving in the Marines. Impressive stuff.
Brief summary /
It's 2004, and twenty-five-year-old Ellis enlists in the United States Marine Corps. At the age of sixteen he was kicked out of the house by his mother because of his homosexuality, and has been more or less homeless ever since. However, that is a secondary reason to join the military. He does it mainly to prove his worth to his mother.
The US military is not exactly a pleasant environment for non-straight people. The Inspection emphasizes the strong presence of homophobia and the conservative image of masculinity. But in an environment where only men are present, who shower and sleep together, implications naturally arise about the sexual orientation of the men.
All the men in the film try so hard to appear masculine that a suppressed, but strongly present homoerotic undertone naturally arises. The tension between the men is intense, which is beautifully portrayed by the many close-ups on the faces.
It is striking that the film wants to leave a positive impression of Ellis' experience. This seems contradictory to the picture outlined earlier. To portray The Inspection as a criticism of the US military is therefore a misinterpretation. It's not for nothing that the film is directed by Elegance Bratton, the real name of Ellis French, the man the film is about.
Bratton is less interested in targeting the Marines and simply wants to tell his own story. His personality is beautifully portrayed. The introverted look at a violent, (a)social world makes The Inspection's angle unique and refreshing, in contrast to more explicit films about the army such as Full Metal Jacket. In that sense, this film is about identity; the military is just a setting to convey the thematic.
Because the focus is strongly on effectively telling the story, the quality of other elements lags behind somewhat. That is understandable, but the risk-free direction, editing, music and cinematography is slightly disappointing. The gray color palette does not make the film very pleasant to watch, and the unsurprising camera techniques and editing do not help. Bratton prevents the style from distracting from the story, but without audiovisual support, he doesn't convey the emotions very effectively either. The result is a very compelling story, but a moderately impressive film.
