Erasing Frank, the debut feature by Gábor Fabricius is best described as a cry in the dark of a totalitarian regime, whose repercussions still seem to echo sensitive ears in our 21st century. Placed on 1983, one year before the Orwellian 1984 (a reference multiply used in the film), it offers a candid portrait of being young and being a suffering hero against all odds; at times it enters into its own dystopian setting which the director has meticulously constructed, and loses its own power.

Daar ontmoet hij Hanna, die niet praat maar met wie hij een intuïtieve artistieke, persoonlijke band voelt. Samen zijn ze vastberaden op te staan tegen het systeem. Wij vertonen deze film in het kader van Movies that Matter On Tour, met een inleiding door ons eigen MtM-team.

In Boedapest in 1983 geven Frank en zijn punkband een opzwepend concert. Tijdens het optreden wordt de band gearresteerd wegens ‘anti-staatsopzweping en propaganda’. Met hulp van zijn vriendin Anna lukt het Frank gevangenisstraf te vermijden en komt hij terecht op de open afdeling van de psychiatrische kliniek, waar Hanna werkt. Daar zijn veel kunstenaars, schrijvers, pacifisten en intellectuelen die ‘herstellen van de stress’.

Ondanks de relatieve vrijheid op de open afdeling heeft Frank moeite zijn geestelijke gezondheid te bewaren. Samen met de gelijkgestemde Hanna zoekt hij manieren om zich te uiten in een omgeving waar alle individualiteit wordt onderdrukt. In vaak surrealistische, droomachtige scènes ontmoet Frank vele interessante personages. Zoals de oude Dr. Eros, die hem waarschuwt ‘het meest progressieve regime ter wereld’ niet te dwarsbomen.
