Net als hoofdpersoon Julia (Julie Ledru) – arm, dakloos en dus constant aan het hosselen – heeft de film nauwelijks tijd om op adem te komen. Dat maakt de momenten waarop Julia de stress ontlaadt tijdens gevaarlijke ritjes op de motor des te intenser.

Julia is non-binair – ze geeft daar zelf in de film geen woorden aan, maar Quivoron onderschrijft het in interviews. (Omdat zij naar haar personage verwijst met zij/haar-voornaamwoorden, zal ik dat hier ook doen.) Ook zonder dat dit benoemd wordt, is overduidelijk dat Julia gefrustreerd is door de constante herinneringen aan het feit dat ze als vrouw wordt gezien – wat niet hetzelfde is als vrouw te zijn – ondanks haar verwoede pogingen om net zoals de jongens te zijn. Dat komt deels omdat vrouwen als minderwaardig worden gezien, zeker in de wereld van illegale straatraces. Maar er is een breder gevoel van onbehagen rond gender dat Quivoron hier invoelbaar maakt.

Just like main character Julia (Julie Ledru) – poor, homeless and therefore constantly hustling – the film hardly has time to catch its breath. That makes the moments when Julia releases the stress during dangerous rides on the motorcycle all the more intense.

Julia is non-binary – she doesn't say so herself in the film, but Quivoron endorses it in interviews. (Since she refers to her character with she/her pronouns, I'll do the same here.) Even without mentioning it, it's obvious that Julia is frustrated by the constant reminders of being perceived as a woman—which is not the same as being a woman – despite her frantic efforts to be like the boys. That's partly because women are seen as inferior, especially in the world of illegal street racing. But there's a broader sense of unease around gender that Quivoron makes palpable here.
