Vooral de langzaam escalerende familieruzies leveren grootse cinema op, in chaotische maar tegelijk puntgave scènes. 

Veertiger Leila zou zo graag een zus willen, zegt ze in het imposante Iraanse familie-epos Leila’s Brothers. Een oudere. Op wie ze kan bouwen. Broers heeft ze in overvloed, vier stuks in totaal, maar binnen hun armlastige familie zorgen zij voor onrust in plaats van steun.

Regisseur en scenarist Saeed Roustayi (van het magnifieke drugsdrama Just 6.5, een kruisbestuiving tussen Heat en The French Connection) introduceert die broers in hun dagelijkse habitat én door andere personages over ze te laten praten. Schoonmaker Parviz ‘kan zijn eigen gewicht nauwelijks meezeulen’, Farhad ‘denkt met zijn buikspieren’ en Manouchehr (de sterke karakteracteur Payman Maadi) is al bij de eerste aanblik te herkennen als proleterige crimineel. Alleen op de degelijke arbeider Alireza valt te bouwen, ook al wordt-ie in de openingsscène door zijn failliete werkgever uit de fabriek gejaagd, terwijl collega’s wél massaal in opstand komen.

The slowly escalating family quarrels in particular result in grand cinema, in chaotic but at the same time flawless scenes.

Leila, in her forties, would really like a sister, she says in the impressive Iranian family epic Leila's Brothers. An older one. Whom she can rely on. She has brothers in abundance, four in total, but within their impoverished family they cause unrest instead of support.

Director and screenwriter Saeed Roustayi (of the magnificent drug drama Just 6.5, a cross-fertilization between Heat and The French Connection) introduces these brothers in their everyday habitat and by having other characters talk about them. Cleaner Parviz 'can hardly carry his own weight', Farhad 'thinks with his abs' and Manouchehr (the strong character actor Payman Maadi) can be recognized as a proletarian criminal at first glance. You can only rely on the decent worker Alireza, even though he is chased out of the factory by his bankrupt employer in the opening scene, while colleagues do revolt en masse.
