Wayne Holmes

Professor of Critical Studies of Artificial Intelligence and Education at University College London

Wayne Holmes is Professor of Critical Studies of Artificial Intelligence and Education in the UCL Knowledge Lab at University College London. He earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford and also holds a UNESCO Chair in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and Education through the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence. Holmes studies the teaching and use of artificial intelligence in education, with particular attention to ethics, human rights, democracy, equity, and social justice. His work encourages educators and policymakers to look beyond claims about what AI can do and examine the educational values, assumptions, and consequences built into these technologies. He has contributed to international guidance and policy work, including UNESCO's Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research and the Council of Europe's Artificial Intelligence and Education: A Critical View Through the Lens of Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law. His research helps the field evaluate AI critically while developing more human-centered and rights-respecting approaches to educational technology.
