Dr. Karen Swan was the James J. Stukel Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) and a faculty member at the Center for Online Learning, Research & Service (COLRS) until her passing on September 5, 2021. She earned her BA in Philosophy from the University of Connecticut in 1972, an MEd in Curriculum & Instruction from Keene State College in 1983, and an EdM and EdD in Communication, Computing, and Technology in Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1985 and 1989. Prior to her tenure at UIS, she held academic and research appointments at the University at Albany, SUNY and Kent State University. A founding member and Fellow of the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), Dr. Swan was a leading figure in distance education, widely recognized for her extensive research on asynchronous online interaction, social presence, and the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework.
