Dr. John Sweller is an Australian educational psychologist and the central figure credited with developing cognitive load theory, an instructional theory that emphasizes the effective management of working memory resources to improve educational outcomes. The extensive groundbreaking work by Dr. Sweller with cognitive load theory inspired other researchers; as a result, cognitive load theory is the foundational concept of Mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning (Mayer, 2024) and e-Learning theory (Mayer et al., 2017). Dr. Sweller earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969, and a Ph.D. in psychology in 1972 from the University of Adelaide. As of September 26, 2026, Dr. Sweller is an emeritus professor at the University of New South Wales – Sydney and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
