TESTS FOR SPEAKING SKILL

Currently, there are many exams to assess learners' English ability, one of which is the Vstep exam, especially speaking skills. Therefore, each skill will have different evaluation criteria and scale to evaluate. I. The structure of VSTEP speaking skill

The structure of the VSTEP Speaking exam consists of 3 parts. To learn more about each part, please refer to the information below!

Part 1:

Social interaction – Candidates answer questions on 1-2 topics given by the examiner.

Part 2:

Solution Discussion – The candidate proceeds to present the solution to a given situation by the examiner.

Part 3:

Topic development – Candidates develop a topic according to the suggested mind map, then answer follow-up questions given by the examiner.

II. Assessment scale of VSTEP speaking

Below is the score scale as well as a summary of the assessment criteria for each candidate's Speaking VSTEP test.

1. VSTEP Speaking test scores

+ Part 1 of the VSTEP test is used to assess the candidate's ability to socialize through a number of questions about the candidate's biography. => Point ladder 5

+ Part 3 of the VSTEP test is used to assess the candidate's critical thinking and reasoning through the extensive questions of the topic in Part 2. => Point ladder 5

2. Scoring criteria of VSTEP speaking skill

- The score of the VSTEP Speaking test will focus on 5 important criteria, specifically as follows:

+ Vocabulary: The vocabulary presented in the candidate's speaking test must be related to the topic. Using more high-level words, the candidate will have an advantage and receive a high rating from the examiner.

(Từ vựng: Từ vựng được trình bày trong bài thi nói của thí sinh phải liên quan đến chủ đề. Dùng được nhiều từ trình độ cao thì thí sinh sẽ càng có lợi thế và nhận được đánh giá cao từ phía giám khảo chấm thi.)

+ Grammar: Candidates can achieve the basic score in this criterion if they use basic English grammar standards and achieve a higher score if they use a variety of English grammar such as: how to make simple sentences, complex sentences, compound sentences, using relative clauses...

(Ngữ pháp: Thí sinh chinh phục được điểm số cơ bản trong tiêu chí này nếu sử dụng chuẩn chỉnh ngữ pháp tiếng Anh cơ bản và chinh phục được điểm số cao hơn nếu dùng đa dạng ngữ pháp tiếng Anh như: cách đặt câu câu đơn, câu phức, câu ghép, sử dụng mệnh đề quan hệ… )

+ Pronunciation: The more accurate the pronunciation of sounds such as monosyllables, odd sounds, final syllables, stress, intonation as well as pronunciation, the higher the candidate's score will be.

+ Fluency level & how to develop ideas: Knowing how to develop and expand ideas & present the test fluently, limiting hesitation or "hmm" when speaking will help candidates achieve high scores.

(Mức độ trôi chảy & cách phát triển ý: Biết phát triển, mở rộng ý & trình bày bài thi một cách trôi chảy, hạn chế tình trạng ngập ngừng hay “ậm ừ” khi nói sẽ giúp thí sinh chinh phục được điểm số cao.)

+ Content meaning & connection: This criterion is also evaluated simultaneously with the above criteria, the ideas presented by candidates in the VSTEP Speaking test must be related to the topic. Besides, using natural intonation, using linking sentences to connect ideas will help candidates conquer high test scores.

III. VSTEP simulation tests for speaking skill

TEST 1

Part 1: (2-3 minutes)

- Do you enjoy conversing with others?

- Do you enjoy chatting with new people?

- What subjects do you often discuss with total strangers?

- Is your country safe?

- Which offense do you consider to be the least serious? Why?

- Which three crimes are the most serious?

Part 2: 3 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to deliver the speech)

You friend's class is discussing whether they should takes photo to celebrate graduation. They are considering three options: taking photo with formal clothes, taking photo with informal clothes, or taking no photo at all. Which do you think is the best choice?

Part 3: 4 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 3 minutes to deliver the speech)

Topic: Teenagers should be encouraged to read

1. What are the differences between the books that people in your generation read and those that people in your parents' generation read?

2. Do you believe that all citizens should have access to free books?

3. How can parents encourage their kids to become interested in reading?

TEST 2

Part 1: (2-3 minutes)

- What types of things bring you joy?

- When are you at your happiest?

- What would you say about yourself?

- How often do you get out and engage others in conversation?

- Do you enjoy being questioned?

- What benefits do conversationalists enjoy?

Part 2: 3 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to deliver the speech)

You see a boy who is bullied. What will you do: talk to his teacher, talk to his parents, or talk with his friends?

Topic: Solutions to improve education system in your country

1. Is a education more important to a boy or a girl? Why?

2. Do you think schools should teach subjects like arts, music and dancing? Why (not)?

3. Is the Internet a valuable education tool?

TEST 3

Part 1: (2-3 minutes)

- How do people manage their emotions in your country?

- Do you believe that individuals can easily read the feelings of others?

- Is it crucial that others have a positive image of you?

- Did you ever witness a crime?

- Do you believe that offenders can change?

- Is stealing prevalent where you live?

Part 2: 3 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to deliver the speech)

What emotion happiness, wrath, or amazement would you like to experience repeatedly? Why?

Topic: Students benefit from teacher punishment in school

1. Do you believe that allowing instructors to penalize kids in the classroom is a good idea?

2. Do all pupils submit to punishments administered by their teachers?

3. What are the negative effects of excessive punishment in schools?

TEST 4

Part 1: (2-3 minutes)

- Do you look people in the eye when speaking to people?

- How does it make you feel when someone cuts you off in the middle of a sentence?

- When you are speaking to someone, do you pay close attention?

- If your partner flirts with someone else, how do you feel or will you feel about it?

- How do you feel using a sluggish computer or smartphone?

- What unpleasant emotions do you detest having?

Part 2: 3 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to deliver the speech)

When speaking to a complete stranger, there are a few things to think about, including what to talk about, where to speak, and what questions to ask. Which do you consider to be the most significant? Why?

Part 3: 4 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 3 minutes to deliver the speech)

Topic: The way individuals study has changed as a result of online courses

1. What tips for learning English would you give someone right now?

2. Do you consider your time as a student to be the finest of your life? why or why not?

3. Should a student have to take out a loan or should their university education be free? Explain your choice.

TEST 5

Part 1: (2-3 minutes)

- What kind of things do you read?

- Where do you enjoy reading?

- How significant is reading to you?

- Do you enjoy conventional music?

- Which musical genres do you enjoy?

- Do you have any musical instrument experience?

Part 2: 3 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to deliver the speech)

You and your husband/wife are debating what to get your kid for his or her birthday. A tablet, a toy, and a picture book are the options. Which option would you pick?

Part 3: 4 minutes (1 minute to prepare and 3 minutes to deliver the speech)

Topic: Music brings people many advantages

1. What type of music is popular in your country?

2. What makes individuals think that music is significant?

3. What advantages does music offer?

IV. Some suggested answers for VSTEP simulation tests

TEST 1 (Suggested Answer)

Part 2:

Well, before I have to choose among three options: Taking no photos, taking with formal clothes, or with informal clothes. Let's talk about all of them.

Firstly, I reliably ignore option taking no photos at all. Graduation is a significant anniversary at the end of school's life. It's a pity if my friend's class doesn't do something to keep the memorable moments. Secondly, whereas formal clothes relevant to the atmosphere of ceremony, the formal clothes make individual to become unique. In my opinion, formal clothes are the best choice. Not only be a photograph with the same kind of costume will awesome, but also it shows the solidarity of collective.

For all reasons I put above. I'll choose taking photos with formal clothes as the best choice for them.

Part 3:

I would like to talk about that reading should be encouraging among teenagers because it brings many benefits. First, the most outstanding is that reading books helps us increasing knowledge. Books are written in many fields so they provide readers a lot of useful information and we will know better and understand about around life and social.

Second, mother plus point of this habit is that improve our memory. When we're reading, our brain will be stimulated in the best way to remember knowledge in the book and use it in studying and working. Finally, after school or working , reading book can reduce our stress. Because it's also considered a method of entertainment in spare time to help us feel comfortable and relax. In conclusion, reading habit has many advantages: increase knowledge, improve memory and reduce stress, so it should be encouraging teenagers.

1. What are the differences between the books that people in your generation read and those that people in your parents' generation read?

Our parents' generation usually keen on history, polictics, social... While our generation likes reading science fiction books, modern novels,...

2. Do you believe that all citizens should have access to free books?

Yes. Vietnamese people read books less than other countries, so this is a solution to encourage people to read more books. In my opinion, books should shared not to be sale.

3. How can parents encourage their kids to become interested in reading?

Parents should set an example for their children by regularly reading, children will copy and follow. That would be their interest when they grow up.

TEST 2 (Suggested Answer)

Part 2:

Well, before I have to choose among three options: Talking with his parents, with his friends or with his teacher. Let's talk about all of them.

Firstly I reliably ignore option reporting his situation to his parents. They can make a storm in a teacup. Harmful behaviors can be happened to defend their son. Maybe he will learn what they live. It has adverse effects to him. In my opinion, talking with his teacher is the best choice for me. It is easy to his teacher to find out about the incident. Since she compasses their students than anyone, the solution will be solved. Maybe some people consider that talking with his friends are better but the case is able to out of control.

Part 3:

There are a lot of solutions to improve educational systems. Firstly, revised curriculum and text books should be used in schools because we need to use a suitable curriculum for children and revised text books instead of wrong and uninteresting ones like in the present. Secondly, they also need to improve facilities schools such as standard desks and tables or modern equipment of teachings... Thirdly, another way to improve educational systems is that teacher has to improve their knowledge and professional. In brief, solutions to improving educational systems include revised curriculum and text, improved facilities and better teachers.

1. Is a education more important to a boy or a girl? Why?

Because Girls have the right same right to education as boys. Educated girls can make informed choices – and from a far better range of options. Educating girls saves lives and builds stronger families, communities and economies. An educated female population increases a country’s productivity and fuels economic growth.

2. Do you think schools should teach subjects like arts, music and dancing? Why (not)?

No, They shouldn’t be compulsory. They serve no actual benefit after graduation. Arts and music should be extras that the students choose out of desire to learn and not because the school requires it.

3. Is the Internet a valuable educational tool?

Sure, the Internet is a great store of knowledge if you know how to use it. So it can help you to find a lot of information you need using the internet. Alternatively, you can take online courses on the Internet.
