English is the most studied language in the world, and 20% of the population speaks it. Therefore, being able to communicate in English can lead to new opportunities in life, including the ability to travel more easily, communicate with more people, and even land a better job. In order to improve as well as develop speaking skills, E2L English will give some useful tips for improving speaking skill effectively.
I. Some useful tips that help you to speak English well
1. Build a solid foundation
- To speak English well, you initially need to build a solid foundation around the following 3 factors: pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
- In particular, we have already had posts for the above 3 factors on our website. You can take a look at those posts to get a clearer view of each of these factors.
2. Make a recording of yourself to practice speaking English
- Make a recording of your speech while you are following. You can hear exactly how your pronunciation differs from that of the native speaker when you listen. Until you are satisfied, practice, make adjustments, and record it again. Another fantastic approach to boost your self-assurance!
3. Retell an English narrative
- By recounting a tale, you can increase the difficulty of the assignment. By using your own words, you summarize other people's ideas.
- I'd start by telling you a well-known tale from your culture. You must accurately translate the subtleties of rhetoric and culture in addition to the literal meaning of each word.
- You may also recount a straightforward narrative in English using various terms. Read a fable or a fairy tale to get started, starting at the beginning. Your English communication abilities will be benefited in any case.
- For example, you can tell funny stories to people around you so people can comment on your shortcomings.
4. Talk to yourself
- Use loud English to converse with yourself. The phrase "Should we go grab a drink of water?" is only one example, or an instruction like, "I need to do a load of laundry today."
- Take up a book instead, and read a few pages aloud. While the reading portion of this exercise may be slower, speaking will be quicker.
- You may also listen to a tape of yourself that you made and check for any pronunciation errors. Inquire about a native speaker's opinion if at all feasible.
- For example, you can stand in front of the mirror to practice speaking and can record your speech for editing.
5. Take part in public speaking competitions
- Large colleges, theaters, and cultural organizations provide meetings for impromptu storytelling, spoken word performances, and open discussions. You can visit these locations to socialize with like-minded individuals and work on your English.
II. Tips for learners when taking VSTEP speaking test
1. Determine the topic of the examiner's question carefully
- In part one, the examiner will ask you 2 topics with 3 questions for each topic, so listen carefully to the topic so that you can guess the question and answer it easier.
2. Practice VSTEP speaking forms
- In each section, there will be different sub-skills. For example, the social interaction section will test description and explanation skills. So, if candidates know each part of the test, the spoken language will help them get a higher score.
3. Expand the logical answer
- Please extend your answer long enough to demonstrate your language ability. Several ways can be used such as description, explanation and example.
- For example, what do you do on the weekend?
Well, I have different hobbies like watching TV, reading books, and chatting with friends. Besides, I often go to the movies and shop with my friends.
4. Keep eye contact when talking to the examiner
- When speaking, looking directly at the examiner shows your confidence.
5. Don't memorize the answers
- If you memorize the answers, when you take the speaking test you are so nervous that you forget an idea which will make you confused and forget the whole lesson. Therefore, you should learn how to develop ideas and structures to develop into complete sentences on your own.
6. Ask the question again if you don't understand the examiner's question
- For example:
+ Can you repeat the question, please?
+ Can you please explain it?
7. Give yourself time to think before answering
- If you are stuck with ideas and can't think of an answer, you can use some of the following ways to buy time:
- Method 1: Use words of opinion
+ Personally, I think...
+ In my opinion...
+ I would like to say..
- Method 2: Repeat the question or use synonymous words/structures
+ What do you like to do in your spare time?
+ What I do when I have free time....
- Method 3: Comment on the question
+ It is a very interesting question but it is very difficult for me.
