Chaîné Turns

Chaînés is a classical ballet term that means “chains” or “links.” Chaînés or “chaîné turns” is when a dancer is performing a series of turns on both feet, picking up each foot back and forth in order to keep moving in a line or circle. It could easily be considered one of the most basic turning step or exercise because chaînés or “chaîné turns” don’t rely balancing on one leg.

For color guard purposes and to keep it simple, we will focus on doing ONLY ONE chaîné turn at a time in our A-T-F.

I want to focus on good technique during the turn such as spotting with our head,

feet in 1st Position Relevé, and beautiful arm positions and posture.

In color guard, you never know which direction you will be moving, so we have two exercises for our chaîné turn,

one moving forward and the other one moving sideways.

Side Chaîné Turn

In this Side Chaîné Turn exercise, we are still facing front to our audience with our upper torso and shoulders, while moving from end zone to end zone. We add a plié in between each turn.
