Satun Toward a Learning City

CIS KMUTT, in collaboration with Satun’s young designers and the old town community, recently launched Awakening Satun, a week-long event supporting Satun’s journey toward becoming a Global Geopark Learning City.
A century-old house on Burivanich Road was transformed into an interactive exhibition space, blending stories of Satun’s geoscience and cultural heritage with the charm of the old town. The exhibitions and activities engaged visitors of all ages, making complex topics accessible and inspiring.
Seedling House
Partnership : Social Design Institute
Internship students from DIPS KMUTT and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, have teamed up under the Social Design Institute (SDI) to develop the Seedling House Project—a creative initiative blending design, sustainability, and youth engagement in Sakon Nakhon. As the prototype nears completion, the Seedling House stands as a model for future-oriented, community-based learning—planting the seeds for a new generation of innovators.

Tech Camp: Sakon Grow
Partnership : Social Design Institute
CIS-KMUTT, in collaboration with local and international partners, is empowering youth in Sakon Nakhon through hands-on learning and design-based innovation, introduced STEAM concepts to children in Tao Ngoi through playful activities like toy-making and creative space design, fostering curiosity and teamwork. With support from OKMD, the camp brought joyful, skill-building experiences to rural classrooms.
Together, these initiatives highlight how design and collaboration can create sustainable futures for rural youth.

Tech Camp: Inspiring Creativity
Partnership : FabLab BANGKOK
CIS-KMUTT, hosted Tech Camp at Nangoi-Ponplalho School in Sakon Nakhon, turning the schoolyard into a creative hub for STEAM-based learning. Guided by Ms. Arunothai Saligakham and Asst. Prof. Dr. Duangkamol Limwongse, students used everyday materials—from agricultural waste to household scraps—to design imaginative shop concepts in their “Tao Ngoi Complex.” The activity encouraged teamwork, storytelling, and English language skills, with students proudly presenting their creations with confidence and creativity

The Tech Camp by the Center of Innovation for Society (CIS), KMUTT, in collaboration with FabLab Bangkok, introduced STEAM-based learning to Ban Kuan Bun School in Sakon Nakhon. Aimed at sparking creativity and curiosity, the camp engaged students in transforming simple toys into motor-powered inventions.
Led by engineer team from FabLab Bangkok, the activities encouraged hands-on learning, teamwork, and basic engineering skills. With custom learning tools from FabLab, students explored how things move—building both confidence and a love for making.
The Culture & Professional Adventure Towards Becoming Citizen of the World
Partnership : Ngee Ann Polytechnic
NP in collaboration with CIS-KMUTT, led an immersive Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP) introducing students to the cultural and creative dynamics of Thailand. The programme began in Bangkok, a lively metropolis and SEA’s key economic and cultural hub. Students explored historic neighborhoods shaped by centuries of migration, where diverse cultures, religions, and traditions have long coexisted. This diversity is reflected in Bangkok’s architecture, religious landmarks, and rich culinary heritage—each shaped by a fusion of cultural identities.
Satoy Story: Reflecting on the Old Town, Telling New Satun Stories

Interns from DIPS showcased their creative contributions to the Satun City Branding Exhibition on August 5, 2024, at Ah Rai Chao,\Satun. Part of the “Satoy Story: Reflecting on the Old Town, Telling New Satun Stories” event, the exhibition presented Satun’s city identity through collaboration with Satoyian, Satun Geopark, and local partners, blending design with cultural insight to envision a fresh narrative for Satun. Special thanks to the Satoyian team for their guidance and support throughout the process.
Social Design Institute (SDI)
Partnership : Chiba University
KMUTT and Chiba University, Japan, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Social Design Institute (SDI), marking a significant step forward in interdisciplinary collaboration for social innovation.
The SDI is envisioned as a collaborative platform, bringing together interdisciplinary teams to address complex challenges across sectors such as economy, society, agriculture, tourism, and industry. More than a research center, SDI serves as a hub for innovation and integrating diverse areas of expertise to co-create impactful design solutions that drive social development. This partnership reinforces the shared commitment of both institutions to create global collaboration and empower communities through socially responsive design.
The Unlock Materials Design
Partnership : DIPROM
CIS-KMUTT partnered with the Department of Industrial Promotion (DIPROM) on the Unlock Materials Design workshop, supporting Thai SMEs in exploring and applying local materials in product development.
CIS designed the program structure and facilitated cultural workshops, bringing in experts from design, materials science, and local communities. With DIPROM’s support, SMEs traveled across Thailand to learn traditional techniques and discover new material possibilities, highlighting the power of design to spark sustainable, place-based innovation.
Klongsan Make
Partnership : FabLab BANGKOK
CIS-KMUTT, in collaboration with FabLab Bangkok, has launched Klongsan Make, a flagship initiative aimed at fostering a vibrant maker movement in the culturally rich Klongsan district. The project has engaged local schools, teachers, students, and community members through hands-on, interest-driven activities that promote creativity and practical learning. Through partnerships with 12 schools, the Klongsan Maker Society was established to empower young makers with the tools, space, and guidance they need to turn ideas into reality. By integrating local insights and case studies, the project reflects the unique character and potential of Klongsan’s communities.
The Culture & Professional Adventure Towards Becoming Citizen of the World
Partnership : Ngee Ann Polytechnic
NP in collaboration with CIS-KMUTT, conducted an enriching Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP) aimed at exposing students to Thailand’s dynamic culture, innovation landscape, and creative industries.
As part of the programme, students explored Bangkok’s historic neighborhoods—areas shaped by centuries of migration and cultural fusion since the Thonburi era. These communities are rich in diverse religions, beliefs, and traditions, reflected in their distinctive architecture, sacred sites, and culinary heritage. The unique blending of cultural techniques and ingredients has resulted in food and design styles that set the area apart.
