The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923. It is the longest running awards competition in the country for creative teens, with submissions judged on the following three categories:
Originality - Work that breaks from convention, blurs the boundaries between genres, and challenges notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed.
Technical Skill - Work that uses technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision or voice, and shows skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative.
Emergence of a Personal Voice or Vision - Work with an authentic and unique point of view and style.
Students receiving awards join the many notable artists and writers who also received awards as teenagers. These include artists Andy Warhol, Ken Burns and Zac Posen, and writers Stephen King, Sylvia Plath and Amanda Gorman.
There are three levels of awards presented at the regional level - Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention. All work receiving Gold Key awards move on to the national competition.
