Artist's Statement: I wanted to explore how self image is perceived by a person and how it is warped based on our surroundings. To explore this, I took the idea of a fun house mirror, and how even though in our everyday life, our bodies can feel so warped even in the normalcy of our own reflections. We perceive our own bodies very differently than others do. Our bodies become constantly shifting and stretching, which is expressed by the warped face in the center, and the black enveloping and stretching it. This is signifying how our perception becomes self distortion at a certain point. The use of warped mirror paper mimics the eye shapes on the other side of the piece, and is shifting lights and perception. The use of the mirror alongside the negative space of black paint is to show how we get enveloped in our own image especially when we are self conscious and examining ourselves.
