Like It’s The Last Time They Will
By Reagan Vozzella
they hug their friends like it’s the last time they will
& say i love you too without hesitation
no doubt in their mind of the gold that they are
slowly becoming truly themselves,
are flowers and fallen petals, candle light and house fires
quick to give you the benefit of the doubt
but these things seen as weakness are their blades
stay true to themselves, so distinguishable
hold their values close a cup of coffee at night
don’t change for anything but the better
loyal night owl
fall in love often with the sound of someone saying their name
the look of the sky on the drive home
cool pavement beneath their feet
& opportunities to make someone’s day
too good to be true, bad at expressing feelings
scared of the highway 2 missed calls and a text
‘let me know when u get home safe’
excuses nerves acceptance letters
find the best in everyone, see sunlight in all people
make friends easily who are nothing like them
and hug them like it’s the last time they will.
Author’s Note: I love being able to tell a story that others can relate to. With this piece, I wanted to describe how I see myself in other people, how I relate to them, because it's not often I really think of how others see themselves in me.
