The project!-
After selecting a reference photo and viewing figure artists, we will be creating our own figure drawings in oil pastel on black paper.
Mentor artist- (2 points)
Shows attempt of utilizing a mark making technique from a mentor artist.
Kehinde Wiley- incorporating patterns, vibrant colors
Edgar Degas- Lines and minor dark outlines, muted colors
Fred Hatt- expressive lines, letting page color show through, squiggly details and bright colors
Clear color usage is visible - analogous, complimentary, monotone, or “realistic” colors as presented by Kehinde Wiley and Degas, vibrant unrealistic colors by Fred Hatt, etc
Use of material- 2 points
Students demonstrate oil pastel on tinted paper utilizing three or more values
Full drawing- (3 points)
Figure fills the whole page and shows evidence of a planned space.
Figure is proportioned into 8 heads
Highest point approaches top of page
Lowest point approaches bottom of page
Craftsmanship- (1 point)
Students exhibit good quality of mark making- no unintentional marks, no fingerprints, no unintentional smudges around the page, smooth blending and application of medium is present.
Mastery- 2 points
Students create a second figure drawing complimenting the original- consider creating a dynamic partner for your first drawing, or even an alter ego
Paper must be at least 12x16
Must use same previous requirements
Step 1- After viewing reference artists, choose one you would like to work in the style of.
Using this inspiration, find a photo you would like to draw for the project.
This photo can be of you, a friend, a celebrity, or any photo you like of a person. The photo must depict their full body (no portraits or cropped images).
Your reference image must depict a dynamic pose- no standing straight up photos, please consider an interesting action line
Once you have found a photo, please add it to the slide show for your class so Miss. Chimenti can print them out for you.
Examples of dynamic poses-
Step 2- Begin by tracing action line on reference photo and divide into 8 heads
Step 3- Sketch reference on black paper in pencil
Step 4- Begin filling in with oil pastel. Consider how your mentor artist makes marks- see Figure Artists page for reference
Miss Chimenti chose to base her drawing around Fred Hatt- see the "squiggles" and bright colors used.
Step 5- Check over rubric to confirm you've completed all the steps. Once finished, upload to your website then submit to google classroom.
