Welcome! For this project, we will practice using the pen tool, live paint groups, swatches, and the pattern tool to create phone wallpapers.
On this page you can find info on how to use each of the tools we will be using. Check the drop down menu for additional resources relating to this project.
First- we will be practicing using the pen tool to trace geometric forms
Then, we will choose images we would like to trace and create a pattern/ composition out of them!
The Pen Tool-
The pen tool creates paths using anchor points. Creating straight lines is done by clicking to create anchor points that the line will follow.
-To create rounder edges with the pen tool, lay down more anchors that are close together.
Closed paths-
To be able to fill a shape with color, you must ensure that it has closed paths. When you drop anchor points witht the pen tool, they produce dots. You can close a path by connecting the last dot with the first dot. You will know you are about to close a path when you see a small dot below your pen tool as pictured here.
Live paint groups- allows you to color forms freely, as you would a drawing on canvas or paper
Create paths you would like with the paint tool
Select whole object and group if more than one form
****Shortcut -use the “K” key for live paint group bucket
Select enclosed path to fill
Use the arrow keys to toggle through additional colors and click to fill
*** Remains adjustable with direct selection tool!
Adjusting Live Paint paths

Open window----> Scroll down to swatches and click
It will open a small window pictured to the right. Next, open swatch libraries by selecting the icon of library books in the lower left corner.
Swatches Library will give you an array of options for different named palletes. Within most (but not all) there are sub sections. For example- In the "Nature" tab there are options for the colors found in different landscapes or places.
When you select one (I chose beach) it will open a separate window with the palette colors. Click the color you would like while selecting the closed form
