“This new development is a game changer...in the transformation of education!”

– Tony Wagner, Harvard University Innovation Lab

What skills do students need in the 21st Century? "Find a square root of 5" or "Tell me five elements in the Periodic Table"? No.... Tony Wagner says:

The Mastery Transcript Consortium "calls for students to demonstrate a mastery of skills, knowledge and habits of mind."

How can students demonstrate mastery? "By presenting evidence that is evaluated against an institutionally specific standard of mastery."

See "The Vision" on the Mastery Transcript Consoritum's website

Each school commits to phase out its existing grade-based transcripts (based on grades A to F) for a digital format that shows:

- students’ academic and enrichment skills,

- areas for growth, and

- samples of work or talents (a video of a public speaking competition or a portfolio of artwork). MORE

"After 124 years, it’s time to reimagine the high school curriculum for the 21st century and to encourage teaching and assessment of the skills and dispositions that matter most. Our students deserve a more accurate measure, and they shouldn’t have to wait another century for their transcripts to better reflect their accomplishments."

Why does The Free Website Project support the campaign for the Mastery Transcript?

The FWP started in 2016 to promote the use of Digital Portfolios.

Look at projects are displayed on websites made by students at High Tech High. “I’d like that system to be in place at my school.” That’s why the Free Website Project was created.

This initiative, the FWP, was started by teachers who see the value of projects.

SUPPORT

We are supporters of the work of the Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC).

We are building the case for DPs (using the model of High Tech High) and we are open to improving our presentations. We believe that a "mastery transcript" (that displays performances of skills) is the best way to persuade parents and students to put effort into "building and maintaining a website to display school work"

  1. We like the free websites offered by Google Sites and Weebly (popular with High Tech high students)
  2. We are open to other ways of preparing websites.

If more schools accept the MTC, then more schools will need to figure out how to display the evidence .... Click here

You can see that sections 7 (light blue) and 3 (orange) are larger, so the student has more evidence to show mastery of those skills

“This is incredibly exciting news … This new development is a game changer. You have provided extraordinarily important leadership for an effort that could well prove to be a tipping point in the transformation of education!”

– Tony Wagner

Expert in Residence, Harvard University Innovation Lab, and Senior Research Fellow, Learning Policy Institute

The Center for PPP is maintained by a group of teachers who are fans of the "no grades" transcript.

The CPPP is NOT connected with the Mastery Transcript Consortium.

Free Workshops for Schools

We are called the Center for Projects, Presentations, Portfolios and Personalization... Then we realized that (1) "personalizing" should come first and that (2) there needs to be a procedure to explain what PERSONALIZING means. If every student has a Personal Learning Plan that is unique to that student (not a cookie cutter set of boxes that every student must fill in), then that's a first step to personalizing the experience of high school for each student.

The Center for Personal Plans, Projects, Presentations and Portfolios.
