Personal Learning Plans

What does a PERSONAL LEARNING PLAN look like?

Some schools ask students to create a contract between the teacher, student and parents. You can see the description of Personal Learning Plans in DiMartino and Clarke's book.

Other schools have a form that the student completes with the teacher.

There is a list of SKILLS that students can select (like badges for Scouts) to complete. See the list of skills that were developed by the Mastery Transcript Consortium.

What does personalization look like at St. Andrews private school?

  • the student meets with an advisor TWICE A DAY

  • hands-on learning

  • Teachers lead a club or athletic activity to extend the personal connections

At the Met School, a Big Picture Learning school (site), students spend two days each week following a mentor and then the other three days are connecting what was learned on the job to the school work.

  • Every 8 weeks, the student and teacher create a contract to plan a project. The student gives an exhibition about the project.

What does it take to PERSONALIZE as school? Look at the steps below at St. Andrews, a private school in Rhode Island (a description from diMartino and Clarke's book)

If your focus is on developing skills, then it is easier to create projects. The projects are connected to the skills that the student wants to develop. The topics of the projects come from the student. That's how to personalize a learning plan.
