STEAM
What is STEAM?
The STEAM program is an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math program. Students in the STEAM program will learn skills like Coding, Robotics, Electronics, Drafting, Art (traditional and digital media) and Engineering.
Students put these skills to work, along with what they learn in Math and Science, to build cool things, complete creative Art projects and solve problems.
STEAM is a project- and problem-based learning experience. The teachers of the four core courses of STEAM (Applied Skills, Art, Math, and Science) have worked together to align the learning and projects of each area such that there is a large crossover of ideas leading to better understanding of all the areas.
What does my timetable look like?
Regardless of year, the learners in the STEAM program will all be together for their STEAM courses. Our Science 8, Art 8, Applied Skills 8, and Math 8 teachers bring real life experience in coding, robotics, computing, media arts, engineering and construction. Students will spend 50% of their school year with their STEAM classmates and teachers, allowing them to develop bonds, explore course ideas, and develop important skills.
In the past, students in the STEAM program have spent their mornings taking English 8, Social Studies 8, Physical Education 8, and an elective with the rest of their grade. Their afternoons have been dedicated all year to the STEAM program. This past year, with changes due to COVID-19, the STEAM cohort was together full days for two quarters. This has given us a greater opportunity to spend time on lengthier and more in-depth projects.
Is STEAM a fit for me?
Straight A's are not required for the STEAM Program. We are looking for students who are creative thinkers, who like to build things, who like to draw and paint, who like to problem solve, who love technology and who like to use it. To be successful in STEAM you also need to be the sort of person who works really well with others but can also take initiative and work by yourself. Students who like applying the things they learn in Science and Math to real-life situations would do very well in STEAM as well.
Students in STEAM are the ones who love the opportunity to use their hands. They have the opportunity to draw, paint, sculpt, weld, carve, design, and program. The STEAM program gives a taste of many areas and allows students to explore how these areas work together.
Why Byrne Creek STEAM?

Our enthusiastic teachers have real-life experience with engineering, technology, Applied Science, Computing and Robotics, Design, Art, Media Arts and Environmental Studies.
Our facilities include state-of-the art upgraded metal and wood shops, computer labs, robotics equipment and science labs.
Students can participate in Burnaby's first FIRST Robotics Team
Our Library Maker-Space allows for more creative opportunities.
Wow! What else do I need to know?
Given all the opportunities and materials that we have access to, one might think that this opportunity would have a cost - but no, the program is free!
If you are interested in the STEAM program, please let us know during the Grade 8 course selection process. We welcome to all students regardless of your catchment. STEAM 8 follows standard School District application procedures for out of catchment and out of district students. Refer to the SD41 Policy Guide.
What opportunities are there after STEAM?
While the STEAM program does not continue after grade 8, students will able to explore the specialized areas that Byrne Creek has to offer. Carry on with science, math, and art - and be on the lookout for AP opportunities in the senior grades. Students can also specialize in areas such as Electronics, Power Technology, Wood and Metalwork, Robotics, Programming, Media Arts, 3D Art, and many more electives.
