English is a required course in Grade 10, 11, and 12
In Grade 10, students will select from these course options:
Composition/Literary Studies 10, Creative Writing/Literary Studies 10, or New Media/Literary Studies 10.
In Grade 11, students will select from these course options:
Composition 11, Creative Writing 11, Literary Adventures 11 (Pre-AP), or New Media 11.
In Grade 12, students will select from these course options:
English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, English 12 AP Literature and Composition
Students in Grade 11 or 12 can also take Creative Writing 12 as an elective.
In all courses, students will read and respond to a variety of texts, including novels, poetry, drama, film, new media, and non-fiction.
Composition/Literary Studies students will develop their writing and spoken language skills in a variety of non-fiction genres, including essay, memoir, and presentation. Students will read and respond to a wide range of literary texts that explore ideas and themes that are relevant to their lives and the world they live in. Creative Writing students will study and appreciate a variety of literary texts to understand structure and style. As writers, they will explore a wide variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children’s fiction, and more. Students use the process of writing, from idea generation to editing and revising, and create a portfolio of work they are proud of.
New Media are texts that exist online. Often they combine words, images, video, and other forms to create meaning. New Media students will explore and create digital texts, as well as other more traditional literary forms. Students will develop their thinking, creative, and technological skills. At the heart of Composition 11 is the exploration of human experience and ways of viewing the world, including First Peoples' literature and ways of being. This course focuses on learning about and expressing understanding through a variety of writing styles.
This course focuses on writing as a personal form that allows us to express our thoughts and ideas. Students will develop their thinking and creative skills through the act of writing, with a particular emphasis on awareness of audience and writing forms. Literary Adventures 11 welcomes lovers of literature and reading along for a journey through a range of genres and themes. We’ll read everything from Shakespeare to spoken word poetry; dystopias to coming-of-age novels. This course is open to all students and class activities will emphasize discussion, literary analysis writing, projects, and creative response. This course is recommended for students planning to continue on to AP English 12 Literature and Composition.

By examining a diverse selection of literature and other texts, students will explore the ways in which these texts depict the human condition. At the heart of English Studies 12 is the development of critical and creative thinking skills, and the ability to collaborate and discuss literature. This course focuses on learning about and expressing understanding through a variety of expression and forms.
English 12 First Peoples explores literature and new media created by Indigenous people. This course will appeal to students who are passionate about social justice issues and anti-racism work. It will also appeal to students who learn by doing, and who want to deepen their connection to the place they live. Students taking the course will be able to express their learning in a variety of ways including podcasting, essay writing, and new media genres. English First Peoples 12 fulfils all post-secondary requirements for college and university, and will give you deeper insight into Canada past and present. All students, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, will appreciate this course.
English 12 AP is a challenging course that will prepare students for post-secondary studies in humanities, social sciences, and business. Students will read a range of literature, classic and contemporary, and respond through discussion, writing, new media, and creative forms. English 12 AP is a wonderful course for students who are curious, motivated, and creative. English 12 AP students can enroll to write the AP exam in May and may qualify for college or university course credit, however, the exam is not required for course credit. Students enrolling in English 12 AP should have at least a B/Proficient in their English 11 course.
This is an elective course open to students in Grade 11 and 12 who love to write. It does NOT replace your core English 11 or 12 course; instead, it’s an opportunity for you to deepen your passion for writing. In Creative Writing 12, you’ll explore a variety of writing genres (fiction, poetry, children’s literature, memoir, non-fiction, and more), develop more strategies and tools for the whole writing process, and create a writing portfolio of your best work.
