Math
Our Program
At Byrne Creek we strive to promote a positive attitude toward mathematics and develop numerate citizens with strong foundational math and problem solving skills.
Mathematics is integral to every aspect of daily life. Mathematical skills are essential for solving problems in most areas of life and are part of human history. (BC Ministry of Education)
Math Pathways
In grades 8 & 9 we focus on developing number sense, algebraic skills and statistical thinking.
In grade 10, students begin to tailor their math program to their personal interests and choose courses that lead to post-secondary studies in the trades, humanities or sciences. The various math pathways (courses and prerequisites) are shown here.
In their senior years students are able to take two specialty courses: AP Statistics and AP Calculus that can provide first year university credits at most post secondary institutions.
Enrichment Activities
Students have opportunities to challenge themselves through the University of Waterloo Math Contests. Most recently we had five students who Certificates of Distinction for their placement in the top 25% of Canadian students who participated. The Radicals Math Club is run by very enthusiastic math students for students. The school periodically offers school-wide numeracy activities.
