Grant Nykaza, a 2013 graduate of Beecher High School, is a decorated distance runner who left a lasting legacy in Illinois high school cross country and track. A consistent top performer, Grant finished as the 1A cross country state runner-up twice, during his freshman and junior seasons. In his senior year, he broke through in spectacular fashion, capturing the individual state championship with a course-record time of 14:22.
On the track, Grant's dominance extended to multiple events. He was a key member of Beecher's back-to-back 1A state champion 4x800 meter relay teams in 2010 and 2011. His junior year saw him win the state title in the 1600m, and his senior season became a crowning achievement. That year, he swept the distance events, winning both the 1600m and 3200m state championships. This extraordinary season firmly established him as one of Illinois' premier distance runners. His accolades in 2013 include being named Milesplit Illinois Class A Track and Field Athlete of the Year, Northwest Indiana Times Co-Athlete of the Year, and Daily Journal Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Grant's talent earned him national recognition as well, qualifying for the prestigious Foot Locker National meet twice during his high school career, which is a testament to his place among the nation's elite runners.
Grant’s exceptional high school career earned him a spot on the track & field and cross country teams at Florida State University, where he continued to showcase his talent at the collegiate level. Grant faced adversity over his career battling injuries. Despite his injuries, he gutted out several performances to help propel the Seminoles. In 2015, Grant played a pivotal role in helping FSU capture the team title at the NCAA South Region Championships, finishing an impressive 16th overall. His strong performance earned him the honor of being named to the All-South Region Team. In Grant’s final season at FSU, he was named a team captain of the cross country team. Nykaza’s high school and collegiate careers showcase a legacy of perseverance, excellence, and a commitment to success in distance running.
