The Beecher Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce Alex Lagesse as a member of the 2020 Beecher Hall of Fame. Lagesse, a four-year starter in softball and a 2008 graduate of Beecher High School. She was 67- 7 on the mound as Beecher was 132-13 during her time as a student-athlete. Beecher won 4 regionals, 4 sectionals, 2 super-sectional titles and one state championship (2007) during her time. During the 2007 state championship run, she was 8-0, did not yield an earned run (only 1 unearned run allowed) and opponents hit just .084 off of her. In the championship game, she faced only one batter over the minimum.
Lagesse won her first 27 games for Beecher going 11-0 as a freshman, 16-0 as a sophomore, 21-3 as a junior, and 19-4 as a senior. Of her seven losses, only one loss came to a school in the same class size. In state tournament series games, she won 14 consecutive games (2 wins in 2006, 8 in 2007 and 4 in 2008) and finished with a 14-1 record in the postseason. Lagesse threw 14 no-hitters (3 in 2005, 5 in 2006, 2 in 2007, and 4 in 2008) four of which were perfect games. She finished with a career 0.40 ERA ( 0.18 in 2005, 0.19 in 2006, 0.48 in 2007 and 0.44 in 2008) and 660 career strikeouts.
Alex was equally the threat offensively hitting in either the leadoff spot or in the 3 hole three of her four years as a starter. She hit .377 as a freshman, .419 as a sophomore, .477 as a junior and .473 as a senior. She also hit successfully in 61 consecutive games over her career.
Lagesse a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association High School All American as a Pitcher/Utility and two-time Illinois All-Stater, was a 4-time River Valley Conference performer, 4-time Kankakee Journal All-Area Team Member, a 4-time Illinois Times All-Area Team Member and Illinois Times Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008. She was also a Chicago Sun Times First Team All-Area Team Member, and a finalist for Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year in 2008.
Alex continued her athletic career at Division 1 Valparaiso (2009-2012) where she was a 2 time All-Horizon League performer and selected to the all-tournament team twice. The 6- time Horizon League Pitcher of the Week holds career (55) and single season (22) records for wins. In 2012, she led Valpo to 42 wins and the NCAA tournament, the first in program history and came one out away from beating Louisville, the #5 ranked team in the country in the Louisville Regional. She also pitched 6 shutout relief innings against SEC member Kentucky. She graduated in 2012 with Presidential Academic Honors.
Alex received her master’s degree in Sports Administration from Valparaiso 2015 while helping to guide the softball team to the Horizon League Championship game in 2014. She joined the staff at the University of Michigan where she was an assistant coach for the 2016- 2018 seasons. During this time, the Wolverines qualified for 3 consecutive NCAA tournaments, one Women’s College World Series and won two Big 10 Regular Season Championships. The Staff was awarded the 2016 and 2018 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Lagesse was active on the organizing committee for The Michigan Softball Academy, which annually raises $150,000 plus for Breast Cancer Awareness. She also worked with admissions, screening candidates during Michigan’s early admissions period.
Alex currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island where she is the pitching coach at Division 1 Providence College, a member of the Big East Conference.
Alex will be honored, along with the other inductees, in between the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball game on Saturday, February 15th around 3:00 pm at the high school. The inductees will also be honored at a special banquet at Cardinal Creek Golf Club later that evening. The event is open to the public and the cost is $40 per person.
