The Beecher High School Athletic Hall of Fame Commission is pleased to announce Mike Bushong as a member of the 2023 Hall of Fame Class. Mike, a 1970 Beecher graduate, was a multi-sport athlete who played a major role in the 1968-69 and 69-70 boys basketball teams which had a combined record of 44-7 his junior and senior year. While Mike made his mark in basketball, he was a well-rounded athlete who competed in track, cross country, baseball, and golf during his high school career.
After graduating from BHS, Mike went on to Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. During his time at Principia, Mike was a starter on the basketball team as a freshman and was named all conference each year of his 4-year career. His prowess also earned him NAIA All-District, NAIA All-State, and NAIA All-American honors during his career. Mike is sixth all-time in career scoring and sits atop the record books in career assists at Principia. Mike also ran track at Principia and earned 3 varsity letters and qualified for nationals in the 100, 440, and javelin. In 2010, Mike was inducted into the Principia Blue and Gold Hall of Fame.
Mike’s basketball career continued after college when he was drafted by a team from London, England in the EBA. Mike also had a brief stint playing for the Spirits of St. Louis of the ABA. In his post-playing career, Mike continued his service to basketball and athletics as a coach at the college and high school levels throughout several decades. He finished up his coaching career as the head coach at his alma mater at Principia College from 2011-2016.
