The Beecher Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 1968-69 boys basketball team as a member of the 2019 Beecher Hall of Fame class. Al Hodgett led this team to a school record 20 straight victories, and a final record of 22 wins and 3 losses. The 22 wins this team accomplished was a school record that stood for 54 years. The highlight of the season was winning the Kankakee Valley Conference Tournament in Momence in front of over 2,000 spectators with a 72-65 victory over St. Anne. The 68-69 team played at an up-tempo pace as they averaged over 76 points per game with all five starters averaging over 10 points per game. All of this was accomplished without the use of a three point shot. Many remember the boys basketball team as a hot ticket in town as fans would line up outside of the school hours before tip-off with the hopes of getting a seat.
Members of the team include: William Brands, Mike Bushong, Tom Harrell, Harry Heusing, Michael Hiatt, Walter Johnson, Wendell Lattz, James Luecke, Tim Ohlendorf, Fred Riechers, Dennis Seitz, and Sonny Storbeck. Tim Cashman (Manager)
The team was coached by Al Hodgett (Head Coach). Nelson Collins (Assistant Coach), and Harold Lattz (Scorekeeper)
The 1968-1969 basketball team will be honored, along with the other inductees, at a special banquet at Cardinal Creek Golf Club on Friday, February 8th at 4:30pm. The event is open to the public and the cost is $40 per person. More information regarding tickets will be available soon.
