This fighter has more atmospheric capabilities than a standard TIE fighter. Due to the position of the wings, it requires a variable geometry to land. TIE Vectors typically are deployed at the far-flung reaches of the Empire, where the cost of garrisoning a full squadron of fighters isn't realistic. They have some shielding and a limited hyperdrive, allowing them to act as more of an independent multi-role fighter.
