“The Help” is an interesting story that tries to exposes the deep-rooted racial and social imbalance faced by black maid woman in 1960.  Through its characters the movie emphasizes the importance of recognizing diverse experiences and fighting for a fairer treatment. The film main focus was to encourage the awareness about diverse backgrounds and histories, which is at the same time the focus of DEI initiatives.

"The Help" es una historia interesante que intenta exponer el desequilibrio racial y social profundamente arraigado que enfrentaban las empleadas domésticas negras en 1960. A través de sus personajes, la película enfatiza la importancia de reconocer experiencias diversas y luchar por un trato más justo. El enfoque principal de la película fue fomentar la conciencia sobre diferentes antecedentes e historias, que también es el objetivo de las iniciativas DEI.

From a certain point of view, being willing to accept everyone in spite of their difference is difficult. Nonetheless, if people are open to talk and listen, they will be able to see from the other person perspective. This willingness promotes a broader understanding of racial, cultural, and religious diversity. The emotional wight that the maids carried on their shoulders such as their feelings and fear can never be compared with nowadays, nonetheless, it still helps as a mirror of the current situation of mental health in the workplace. DEI initiatives also recognizes that inclusion also involves emotional safety and well-being.

Desde cierto punto de vista, estar dispuesto a aceptar a todos a pesar de sus diferencias es difícil. Sin embargo, si las personas están abiertas a hablar y escuchar, podrán entender las cosas desde la perspectiva del otro. Esta disposición promueve una comprensión más amplia de la diversidad racial, cultural y religiosa. El peso emocional que llevaban las empleadas domésticas sobre sus hombros, como sus sentimientos y miedos, nunca puede compararse con el presente; no obstante, aún funciona como un espejo de la situación actual de la salud mental en el lugar de trabajo. Las iniciativas DEI también reconoce que la inclusión también implica seguridad emocional y bienestar.

Another issue that this movie touches is women right, it highlights how traditional norms of the times restricted women personal expression, which was portrayed in Skeeter. Nowadays, workplaces are supporting of their employee’s value, in spite of the gender.

Otro tema que aborda esta película es la de los derechos de las mujeres; destaca cómo las normas tradicionales de la época restringían la expresión personal de las mujeres, lo cual se refleja en Skeeter. Hoy en día, los lugares de trabajo están apoyando el valor de sus empleados sin imprtar el género. 

Finally, while thinking about what to write I suddenly though that some of these problems in workplace are still happening nowadays. Every company has its problem. The good ones somehow try to have many activities for their employees or offer benefits to make a warmer environment such as providing lunch, make family days, or dynamics workshop; and the not so good ones will also provide something. Nonetheless, the ones that are about cleaning like garbage collectors, maids, janitors, etc. are still a vulnerable group that people tent to look down. Sadly, it is somenting that is normalized which makes me think that even if we have gotten better from the past we still have a lot to work on.

Finalmente, pensando en qué escribir, de repente me di cuenta de que algunos de estos problemas en el lugar de trabajo todavía ocurren hoy en día. Cada empresa tiene sus problemas. Las buenas empresas de alguna manera intentan tener muchas actividades para sus empleados o ofrecer beneficios para crear un ambiente más cálido, como proporcionar almuerzo, organizar días en familia o talleres de dinámicas; y las que no son tan buenas también ofrecen algo. Sin embargo, aquellos que trabajan en roles de limpieza como recolectores de basura, empleadas domésticas, conserjes, etc. siguen siendo un grupo vulnerable al que la gente tiende a menospreciar. Lamentablemente es algo que se normaliza y eso me hace pensar que, aunque hemos mejorado en comparación al pasado, todavía tenemos mucho por trabajar.
