ESSAY

There may be times in the years ahead when you will be asked to write an essay about yourself. We are preparing you by asking you to write a 1 to 2 page essay. You will be asked to use this for college applications, scholarship applications, scholarship folders, and resume letters when doing your job search activities. Below are listed some of the items you may want to include.

* Introduce yourself and your family.

* Discuss your values and goals (the things that are important to you and the reasons why).

* Indicate what you plan to do when you graduate and why you are interested int his field.

* Include any academic, athletic, or community activities in which you have participated, paying attention to those that show evidence of your leadership ability, motivation, self-discipline and maturity.

* Discuss the college or vocational school of your choice and the reason for the selection of the school.

* Where do you see yourself working in five or ten years? How did you select this occupation?

* Where have you worked? How long? What do you do?

* In a summary paragraph you may wish to include any special circumstances that you want the reader to be aware of when considering your application, such as family or financial circumstances, special talents or skills, achievements and awards.

Suggestions

1. Type (or write legibly in black ink) on 8 ½ x 11 paper, on one side only.

2. Read carefully for correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and content.

3. Put your draft aside for a day then read it and revise if necessary. Is it well organized? Is it

interesting? What is the tone? Is it personal? Don’t make it formal, let others know who you are

open up.

4. If possible, let someone else (an English teacher for example) read and evaluate your essay.

5. Make a copy of your essay for your records.
