- Read ALL the sources - take notes using the Rhetorical Pyramid.
Write a good intro to set up your thesis. Try an appropriate anecdote which sets up your defensible thesis.
Evidence - Begin with your own example which supports your thesis. Develop a line of reasoning that supports your thesis = prove it.
Foil 1 - use one of your required sources - counter it with your own example.
Foil 2 - use one of your required sources - counter it with your own example.
Use one of your required sources to support your argument.
Conclusion which refers back to your opening anecdote.
Close Reading
- Highlight what "pops" for you as you the read the passage. Then ask yourself why it stood out.
Intro - state the rhetorical setting of the passage. Who wrote it, for whom, and for what purpose?
Thesis - what are YOU going to write about? (Not what was the author's thesis - what is YOUR thesis.) Preview what you will cover to establish your line of reasoning which proves your thesis.
Evidence -
Tell HOW and WHY the author used the rhetorical strategies (not just what it meant). Your body paragraphs should be peppered with phrases like, "the author used the historical allusion to..." and/or "Thatcher's use of the personal anecdote underline her message to her audience by..." Talk about purpose, motive, and reason for the rhetorical strategies - not just what they meant.
Conclude the effectiveness of the author's strategies. (They were VERY effective!)
