Afterlight - Summer Court

History

The Summer Court is one of the four Seasonal Thrones of Thorin and among the most vibrantly storied. It was formed in the wake of elemental convergence, when the Pulse surged strongest during the first great turning of the seasons. From that fertile storm, the Summer Fae emerged, sunborn and heat-bound, born of golden chaos and blooming violence. Unlike the more hierarchical courts, Summer was not founded by kings or queens, but by celebrants, storm-callers, and solstice druids. Its capital, Veridawn, grew not as a city but as an ever-shifting oasis of heat and harvest, pulsing with life at the heart of the wilds.

The Summer Fae refused the Unseelie-Seelie divide early on, embracing the duality of joy and fury as one sacred fire. They were once considered lawless by the other Courts, and for a time were exiled from the first High Conclave of Thorin. But with the first Solstice Pact, they were restored to power, and have since been seen as chaotic but essential to the land’s survival.

Society

The Court thrives on emotion, sensation, and connection. Their lives are ruled by the turning of the sun, the ripening of the fruit, and the swell of desire. People who feel everything to the fullest, and expect you to do the same. Polyamory and open relationships are common and culturally respected. Love is seen as a seasonal tide, not a singular oath. Body expression is central: tattoos, vine-bindings, and blessed scars from fire or storm are symbols of beauty. Fashion is sun-kissed and free: light silks, flowing wraps, sheer lace, gold and bronze adornments, feathers, flower chains, and glowing body paint.

While not hereditary, there are still titles like Lord and Lady, but these roles are bestowed through acclaim, trial, or challenge, and they are always temporary unless reaffirmed through public support. To become a Lord or Lady in the Summer Court is to earn your influence, and Lords/Ladies are expected to host, protect, and guide a region, not rule it. If they lose the people's favor, or are bested emotionally or magically, their title can be taken away in ceremony. These roles are as much performative as administrative. A Summer Lord who does not inspire, entertain, or protect will not remain one for long.

Summer Fae are embodiments of sunlight, pasison, and nature in its ripest form. Their physical traits often reflect their emotions or their magical alignment. Skin tones vary widely; golden bronze, earthen brown, honey-kissed, copper, or dappled like sunlight. Hair can be flame-red, sunflower yellow, white, leafy green, or glowing with actual embers or pollen dust. Eyes are typically citrine, gold, jade, storm-blue, or vividly matching with an emotion. Some Summer Fae have floral antlers, glowing veins, or elemental trails.

Military

Though not known for formality, the Summer Court boasts a formidable martial tradition, largely built on instinct, magic, and emotional resonance rather than rigid training.

The Blazeborn

The primary fighting force of the Summer Court. Warriors are chosen through duels of passion. One must win a public fight to earn their blade.

They wield steel weapons enchanted to grow hotter as their wielders grow more intense.
Known for dueling in bare feet, clad in glowing sashes, with weapons wreathed in flame or wind.

The Sol Riders

The swiftest and most agile force within the Court. Each rider forms a bond with a creature born of Summer's pulse, mounts that embody speed, heat, and primal energy.

Mounts are never tamed; they are chosen, and the bond must be mutual. These beasts are sacred, treated as equals, and celebrated as divine gifts.
Ride with sun-charged spears or whips of burning vine, designed to stun and disarm rather than kill unless wrath calls for more.

The Solstice Circle

Arcane users and defenders, wielders of fire, water magic, and growth spells.

Control temperature, wind, photosynthesis, and flames.
In times of peace, they bless crops, heal burns, and call summer rain. In war, they wither fields, blind armies, and surge fires.
