Afterlight - Ashrathar

History

Ashrathar is the oldest known kingdom in Brelaton. It was carved into the colossal Fel Mountain range, nestled within a yawning chasm near the edge of the western cliffs, where the mountains overlook the sea.

Legend holds that it was founded by Vulon herself, the Moon Dragon Goddess, who chose to live among mortals in a veiled form. Some claim she descended in grief after the fall of Yol, others that she withdrew to ensure balance remained in the world. Regardless of the tale, her presence lingers. The ruling Queen of Ashrathar has reigned for centuries unchallenged, and her unageing form, along with her command of magic, has birthed rumors that she is Vulon in mortal form or a divine descendant. Then, one fateful day, she stepped down, choosing to watch over the kingdom as a royal advisor rather than on the throne.

Unlike the surface kingdoms, Ashrathar did not spread outward. It grew inward, forging ancient halls, stone courts, and buried libraries within the bones of the mountains. Its isolation became its strength, a place that did not war for land, but for knowledge, balance, and the sacred protection of power.

Society

The kingdom is home to dragons, as well as their mortal descendants, dragonborn, lizard-folk, and mountain dwarves. In the deeper reaches of the chasm dwell creatures of the night; batkin, dark elves, and other beings who find peace in the quiet, cold dark. All are bound by a mutual respect for sstrength and discipline. Dragons and dragonblooded form the cultural core of the kingdom. They are not rulers, but are revered as living symbols of Ajagar's divine past. Elders among them serve as advisors, historians, and judges.

Ashrathar's people are hoarders of knowledge, but not teachers by nature. To earn wisdom, one must prove their worth through study, service, or ritual passage. Outsiders are never freely given knowledge, only traded or tested for it. Oral traditions are used only among trusted kin, and written history is encoded, layered in a magical cipher or draconic tongue. Their central library houses ancient scrolls, draconic tomes, and fragments of celestial history.

Military

Though Ashrathar barely makes any political moves on the surface, it holds the most formidable military in Brelaton.

The Ashfang

Disciplined and devastating in close and mid-range combat; they are elite warriors chosen from among dragonborn lineages.

Wear obsidian-black armor etched with moonsteel, enchanted to both resist magic and elemental force.
Trained in draconic martial traditions, they fight with cold precision and unity.

The Drakesworn

Rarely deployed, but when they fly, kingdoms tremble. Bound by pact and bloodline, each dragon flies with a mortal Drakecaller.

A fleet of true dragons, born of oaths to the Queen and bound by ancestral pact.
Each is paired with a Drakecaller, a mortal who can speak directly to their bonded beast and command them in battle.

The Luna Order

An arcane division composed of spellcasters trained in war-magic and spiritual defense. Guardians of relics and archives.

Experts in magical combat, wards, and spiritual defense.
Serve as both battlefield mages and archivists of magical warfare.

Ashrathar's military doctrine is simple; strike and make it final. Because of this, the kingdom is rarely challenged, it has no need to posture. Its reputation speaks for itself.
