Afterlight - Night Court

History

The Night Court is among the firstborn courts of Thorin, forged in a time when magic was raw, and the Fae were still beasts in beautiful skins. Before the seasonal divisions, there were the primal courts of light and shadow: Day and Night.

The Night Court was born beneath starlit canopies, where the moon never wanes and the sky is perpetually cloaked in a gentle darkness. It drew the Fae who thrived in subtlety and mystery, beings of shadow, secrets, and stillness. In these lands, beauty was feared as power. When the Eclipse Wars erupted between Day and Night, the Night Court bore its wounds with pride. They lost much but remained unbroken, eventually receding into their own territory where they nurtured tradition like a flickering lantern.

While the Unistus Court seeks untiy and reform, the Night Court keeps the old ways close. Though viewed by others as cold or cruel, those who enter their realm find not cruelty, but discipline, purpose, and elegance sharpened like a blade.

Society

It is a place of whispers and starfire, its architecture grown from obsidian trees, moonstone towers, and glass gardens that bloom. Music is subtle and slow, and conversation is a chessboard. Their culture is not brutal; it is patient. Tradition is paramount. Elders and bloodlines are honored, names are passed like heirlooms, and lineage is fiercely guarded. Hierarchy flows from magic, not charm. The stronger your magical lineage or shadow affinity, the higher your seat at the table.

The people of the Night Court have a severe, haunting beauty. Skin like frosted moonlight or deep obsidian, eyes that glow in the dark, and hair like smoke or ink. Their fashion consists of layered, flowing robes, gemstone-threaded sashes, and silver-fanged jewelry. They are highly ritualistic. Every greeting, gift, or insult follows an established custom. Breaking etiquette is considered more dangerous than open aggression.

The night Court is ruled by a single sovereign or, in rare eras, a diarchal pair who embody the court's sacred duality; stillness and shadow, law and lore. The monarch is always of highly concentrated nightline blood, meaning their ancestry ties back to ancient, primordial Unseelie Fae or spirits. Their word is law, though rarely spoken. The monarch communicates largely through advisors, dream messengers, or proclamations during gatherings. It's said the crown can only rest on one who has walked the void between awake and sleep, and survived with both sanity and soul intact.

Military

The Night Court's forces are lethal, disciplined, and designed for control. Every soldier is trained as both a fighter and an infiltrator; their strength lies in striking where no one expects with terrifying precision.

The Moonshade

The standing army and guards of the Night Court. Silent, coordinated, and immaculately disciplined. Known for never breaking formation, even in death.

Their armor is made of duskmetal and obsidian, enchanted to not reflect light or make a sound.
They communicate via gesture codes and telepathic chains.

The Night Mares

Specialized assassins and spies of the Court, operating in political, magical, or even dream-based warfare.

Recruited young and trained in shadow-weaving, illusion, and emotion-suppression magic.
Wear half-horned masks, and their identities are wiped from all official records.

The Noctis

An arcane force of dreamwalkers and magic-duelists, charged with defending the Nigth Court from magical incursions and threats.

Their magics deal with memory sealing, starbinding, and shadow defense.
The Noctis wear robes laced with starlight threads and often bear glowing runes carved into their skin.
