Afterlight - Autumn Court

History

The Autumn Court rose in the earliest days of mortal cultivation, when the Fae learned to reap what others sowed, and to sow power in places others forgot. Though never formally allied to either the Seelie or Unseelie, Autumn has always walked the line between the two, leaning more toward Unseelie ruthlessness but without the cruelty-for-cruelty's sake. They instead value purpose, strategy, and leverage. If the blade must fall, it does so with poise and perfect timing.

Autumn Fae were once mercenaries, thieves, and deal-brokers, but they eventually grew into a full court with their own monarchs and territory. From their combined power rose Aurelaris, a living city hidden in a forest that constantly turns, red, gold, brown, and green, and is said to never appear the same way twice. It is a place of deals, festivals, and hidden knives.

Today, the Autumn Court is both feared and respected, the deal-makers and king-breakers of the continent. They are often the court behind assassinations that appear like accidents. Also brokers of peace during wartime, usually because they engineered the war in the first place. As well as rich in crops, trade, and oaths. They control much of Thorin's farmland and wine. Though no one truly trusts the Autumn Court, no one dares ignore them.

Society

The Autumn Court is built upon cunning, competition, and appearances. They are the most politically cutthroat of the courts, and the most enchantingly deceptive. Every smile is a blade, every favor a future debt. They're often deceivers, shapeshifters, dealmakers, spies, and courtiers. However, they cherish beauty and etiquette, making their deceit feel like theater, always performed with flair and seductive polish. There is a cultural obsession with balance between honesty and manipulation, give and take, growth and decay.

Here, the Fae are as richly varied as their forest. Skin tones range from bark-brown, copper, russet-gold, to alabaster. Their hair flows like fire, burnt orange, redwine, deep chestnut, goldenrod, or dark leaves. Some sport animalistic features like fox ears, antlers, leaf-shaped wings, and claws like thorns. Fashion is opulent but earthy: flowing silks, embroidered jackets, vine-sashes, and jewelry made of amber, bone, beetle-wings, and copper.

The ruler of the court is called the Amber Regent. All monarchs of Autumn hold their reign by merit as much as bloodline. They must be crowned by the court's will, and bound magically to the season itself. This binding ensures that their magic, decisions, and body reflect the health of the court. If the court suffers, so does the crown. Their actions will always be weighed by a force greater than politics: the pulse of the land.

Military

Like their reputation, the court boasts one of the most strategically dangerous militaries in Thorin. While not the largest or magically destructive, they are the best at winning without ever engaging in a fair fight.

The Foxtrot Guard

Warriors and duelists, trained not only in blade but in deception, tactics, and political violence.

Fight with curved sabers and whisperknives enchanted to silence breath.
Their armor is gilded leather with layers of illusionary shimmer, always shifting in hue.

The Crimson Sentinels

Guardians in both practicality and ceremony, the faces of the Autumn Courts forces. They serve as beacons, or illusions of safety.

Clad in viridium armour bearing the same shade as their namesake, their weapons laced with a potent neurotoxin.
Trained in both offense and defense, they also serve as eyes and ears within the court, keeping an eye of noble and peasant alike.

The Serpent Tongue

An intelligence force rivalling the Court of Whispers, they're ruthless and stop at nothing to gather and horde information, while ridding themselves of obstacles along the way.

Shrouded in glamour and shadowed illusions, dreams and the halls of rival courts are hardly foreign grounds.
Members are taken in young, bound by blood oath to serve the goals of the Autumn Court alone.
