Week 1
The line of action is an essential concept in animation that helps animators create believable movement for their characters. By following this imaginary spine, they can create performances that convey emotion, personality, and weight, drawing viewers into the story and creating a more engaging experience.
Line of action helps me draw very well, and at the same time I can understand the dynamics of the human body more clearly. I can improve my observation of movement when doing figure drawing and draw better. The next time I draw, through learning line of action, I can draw the dynamic lines of the human body first instead of directly trying to draw the various parts of the human body.
Week 2
This book helps to understand the relationship between bones and muscles and the human body. The content of the book explains in detail the relationship between each muscle in the human body and provides in-depth explanations for readers to understand.
By reading this book, I understood the difference between human muscles and bones and better understood the structure of the human body. It also helped me a lot in human body sketching.
This book about human muscles and bones helped me gain a deeper understanding of the human body structure and allowed me to learn the painting techniques of various parts of the human body. To lay the foundation for future study and painting, I can practice more painting while understanding the relevant knowledge of this book.
Week 3
The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl
a 2017 Japanese animated romantic comedy film directed by Masaaki Yuasa.
The drawing style of the characters and scenes in this movie has smooth lines, and the characters have obvious line of action. It is a good movie for learning the movements of anime characters.
At the same time, the plot and painting style of the movie are also very interesting and can bring a good sensory experience.
Over a weekend I watched this movie again, which I had seen before, but this time I watched it with the attitude of learning. I found the way the human body is painted in this movie very interesting, the painting style is very novel and the overall look is silky smooth. The color selection of the movie is also very unique and refreshing, which allowed me to understand and learn more about the drawling style.
Week 4
The golden ratio, also known as “Phi” and more popularly known as the Fibonacci Sequence, is an irregular equation. A ratio of 1 to 1.618 is what is referred to as an irrational number, similar to that of the famous Einstein equation “pi”. For the sake of beautiful aesthetics, this ratio can be a helpful tool for capturing balance and pleasing proportional values within your artwork.
The idea is that it is a perfect rectangle, and when divided into uneven halves with a perfect square on one side, the leftover rectangle will have the same proportions as the original perfect rectangle. If this shape is continuously divided into two using the ratio, it will always result in a perfect or golden rectangle and square.
The golden ratio is very common and can be found in many buildings and paintings. It is also found in many places on the human body. Understanding and learning the golden ratio can help me learn painting and create better works.
Week 5
Shape in art is an element that refers to an enclosed two-dimensional area that has length and width.
Shape is one of the building blocks that artists use to create images and represent subjects. Shape's boundaries are defined by other elements of art such as lines, values, colors, and textures.
Shape can be either geometric or organic, depending on whether it is regular and precise or fluid and natural.
Shape helps give an artwork definition, texture, depth, and movement.
In paintings, there are often many shapes. Shapes are created together through different combinations to create special works. Reasonable and bold use of shape combinations can create better works. After learning about shapes, I also tried to draw several characters, all based on different shapes. This is fun and makes me think through shapes before painting.
Week 6
The five main body type shapes are rectangle, inverted triangle, hourglass, pear and apple.
Drawing can be well aided by understanding the basics of body shape.
When creating anime characters, can create based on these five body shapes, using exaggeration or other methods to obtain different character designs.
Using these five shapes when sketching can also be a good help in sketching the human body and movement.
The human body can be roughly divided into five conditions. After learning this, I became more comfortable when painting, which also enabled me to better grasp the human form. I can also do more drawing exercises on shapes and human bodies to improve myself. When I create paintings in the future, I can create based on shapes.
Week 7
Traditional Architecture vs Modern Architecture
Traditional Architecture : more decorations, the building appearance is complex, the construction process is numerous, and the emphasis is on appearance beauty and numerous decorations.
Modern Architecture : an architectural movement or architectural style based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function (functionalism); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament.
Modern buildings have simpler lines and clear overall shapes, while traditional buildings have a complex appearance and focus on aesthetics.
After understanding this, I can take these factors into consideration when creating works about modernity and tradition.
In order to learn better, I can also have a deeper understanding of architecture-related knowledge and think about the combination of architecture and painting creation from different perspectives.
Week 8
Nature is full of fascinating patterns that can be found in everything from the smallest of organisms to the largest of landscapes. These patterns can be seen in the way that leaves grow on a tree, the way that snowflakes form, and even in the way that galaxies are arranged in the universe.
After doing some nature-related sketches by going out, I did more searches about nature. This made me discover that shapes are everywhere in nature and each has its own beauty. I can do more sketches about nature to improve my understanding of shapes. In future studies, you can also use shapes related to nature to create animations, and use the changes in shape and time in nature to understand the changing rules of animation. I also discovered that each season has different characteristics and color distinctions, which got me thinking more about color techniques.
Week 9
Color theory is an essential concept in the world of film and visual arts, which involves the study of colors and their relationships with each other. It is a scientific approach to understanding how color works and how it can be used effectively in visual communication.
Color theory plays a significant role in the visual storytelling of movies and TV shows. It helps filmmakers convey emotions, set the tone, and create a specific atmosphere that enhances the story’s message.
Learning about colors has taught me that different colors can reflect different emotions and stories. After understanding and creating about color, I felt the impact of color changes on the mood of the image. I can improve my use of color and animation by experimenting more with different colors and understanding their relationship to emotions.
After understanding this, I can also think more about the feelings brought by colors and use them when creating.
Learning Journal
After 9 weeks of study and research, I learned a lot of knowledge, created many works, and conducted various painting exercises. From the basic line of action, to the shapes closely related to painting, to the architecture and nature in life. Every week I gain a new understanding of things and learn something new.
Learning Line of Action is very new to me, because I mainly draw realistic human bodies and rarely draw dynamic curves of the human body. This knowledge allows me to pay more attention to the line of action of the human body and assists me in creating human body paintings. Line of action helps me understand the direction of the action very well, which will also be very helpful for my future animation creation. Understanding movement is the basis for making animations. Having a clearer understanding and understanding of each movement has helped me create a variety of creations. From Animation Narrative's storyboard creation to Animation Fundamentals' Maya animation production, Line of action plays a very important role. It allows me to better and faster determine the direction and posture of the character's movements. In future studies, I will need to observe more the movements of things around me and analyze their line of action, in order to improve my action painting abilities. With the learning of line of action, when I draw animation in the future, I can first draw the roughly required action form in the form of a line, and then do detailed human body drawing.
I did a simple line of action exercise, and I was able to draw the action I wanted in three steps, which was a good progress for me. There is no need to repeatedly make tedious determinations, and the desired action form can be displayed. Line of action is of great help to my painting.
Line of action practice for storyboard
1) Make sure the line of action that I want
2) Sketch the details of movement
3) Check if the line of action is correct
The study of shapes and the human body is not completely new knowledge to me, but it is the first time that I have such a deep understanding and try the combination and application of shapes. I have studied the shape of the human body before, but in this study it was the first time that I could observe the human body so clearly and draw it. I also tried for the first time the new effects brought by different arrangements and combinations of shapes. The application of this knowledge is very helpful for my learning and creation. The shapes of the human body can be roughly divided into five types, but there are more than five creative combinations. Countless creative works can be obtained through the combination of these shapes.
Shape not only helps with drawing and creating characters, but also helps with positioning of human movements. Through the combination and drawing of shapes such as squares, ovals, circles, etc., you can quickly determine the approximate direction of human body movements and perform more accurate drawings. Combined with the learned human body curves, tedious action drawing becomes simple and easy. The application of this knowledge in 3D animation can also help me quickly determine what actions my character needs to show and what actions need to be relaxed. In my daily life and leisure time, I will use some sketching websites to conduct more shape exercises to help me apply and improve this knowledge.
After learning shapes, I also used human body shape combinations to help me determine the angles I wanted when drawing animation narrative storyboards, which made my storyboards clearer and more accurate.
Obtain different angles of human body movements by using different perspectives of shapes, and draw the storyboard.
Different angle of character
I use shape to determine the angle of character body that I want
Then I sketch the details of each scene of storyboard
This make the storyboard easier to create
During the week when the group was out doing architectural painting, I had a deeper observation and understanding of the buildings around me. After living for so long, I found that I had never really taken a serious look at everything around me. Their shapes, materials, design principles, their changes, the differences between then and now. Working with the group during my study away week, I gained a deeper understanding of what these buildings are all about.
Modern architecture mainly emphasizes smoothness and simplicity of lines. Most of them are squares, rectangles or simple shapes such as triangles and ellipses. This simple and smooth shape can better save materials and manpower, and simplicity is also one of the modern trends.
Traditional architecture will have a variety of different patterns, most of which are a combination of complex graphics. The material selection and manpower of traditional architecture require more expenses, and the design and production are also more cumbersome. The beauty and appreciative appearance of traditional buildings can make people feel the beauty and history of the past. This beauty is also completely different from modern architecture.
When doing architectural drawings, I observe buildings from different angles and draw them, which helps me better understand shape distortion and perspective. This allows me to get the scene I need faster when doing some painting and draw out the shape of the building quickly.
When practicing, I still need to try more drawings of different buildings to continuously improve my architectural drawing ability and shape perspective ability. Studying about architecture has given me a deeper understanding of the impact of the combination and use of shapes on appearance. It also allows me to clarify the feeling and use of shapes I want when painting in other subjects.
Different perspectives of the building can bring different feelings.
Buildings from a low angle of view will look more oppressive, while buildings from a high angle of view will look more macroscopic and vast.
Nature is around us all the time. Leaves, rain, snow, wind, animals, clouds... everything is composed of shapes, and shapes will continue to change over time. This study about nature made me observe the things around me carefully. I found that pigeons seemed to be composed of two circles, one large and one small, plus a few simple geometric shapes. I also found that different leaves have different textures. I also found that the big trees were still and moving. The appearance when blown by the wind is completely different. Shape is in every corner of life, in every detail.
This study about nature made me understand the beauty in life and also taught me to observe. Everything in nature has different shapes, and these shapes can be exaggeratedly deformed or changed to create simple and interesting animation effects. Many animations are based on natural shapes that are modified to produce fascinating effects.
Learning about nature also allowed me to first observe the appearance of the thing I want to create when making animations, and then use Maya for animation. With this knowledge, every time I make an animation, I will first find information related to the thing I want to make before making it. This can make my works look more realistic and interesting.
Shape of different lives in life
Simple shape but can create many things
Just few circles, some easy triangles but can get the shape of life
Color has always been a subject of great interest to me, and I like to combine highly saturated colors when making my own creations. In this study, I learned more about the relationship between color and emotion transmission. Different colors can bring many different feelings, and the reasonable and clever use of colors can make your works more interesting and attractive. I understand the feelings that color combinations can bring, and I also learned to use different colors in different storylines to create the emotions I want viewers to feel.
In the subsequent creation and study, I need to appreciate some more works to understand the master's use of color and learn the techniques involved. At the same time, I also need to paint and think on my own to use color techniques more deeply to make my use of color more comfortable.
The knowledge of color allows me to change the mood I want to create by changing the subject color when making movies and animations. It also allows me to think about the subject color I want to use when painting in the future, so that my creations can be more creative.
When I was making the storyboard and animatic of Animation Narrative, I used simple colors to get the emotion I wanted to create.
Bright colors can bring cheerful emotions, while dull colors can make the picture more depressing.
These 9 weeks of study were undoubtedly precious and fruitful to me. I learned a lot of new knowledge, consolidated old knowledge, and learned a lot about animation skills. These skills are indispensable in my future creations and will help me become a better animator. From the basic line of action to the in-depth application of colors and images, these have made me more comfortable in animation creation. In order to improve myself, I still need to practice more and think about my skills. Only through continuous practice and hard work can I make my works better and my skills become more proficient until they are truly mature.
