Happy Friday dragons!
WE ARE WILSON, we are loyal, we are USD112! Recently, I’ve heard people make comments that we don’t do anything for kids. I don’t have enough space in this newsletter to let everyone know what the our teachers and staff do at Wilson for kids! Not everything that this wonderful group of people do for kids can be shared with the public. But there are a few things that we do for kids, that I do want to share.
For instance, in November, I told our staff and teachers that if they wanted to wear jeans every day of school in the month of December they could pay $10 and wear jeans all 15 days. The plan with that money is to use it to help make a merry Christmas for less fortunate students. This week we are holding our annual food drive. Food from that drive will go to help fill food baskets for some of our less fortunate families. On Wednesday of next week a group of our junior high and high school students will be going shopping and purchasing gifts. Wednesday night a group of students will be wrapping those gifts, to help all of our students have a merry Christmas.
I’d like to share a little bit about what the impact of wearing jeans every day in December has meant to me. Even though wearing jeans and buying the privilege to do that, was my idea, it has had a different impact on me this year than it has in previous years when I’ve had my school staff do this. Every day when I get dressed for work, I think about the faces that I will see and the fact that we had over 20 staff members pay $10 to help make a difference in our students lives makes me very happy and proud to be a Wilson Dragon.
Building positive relationships with as many students as I possibly can, is one of my biggest passions i have as a school leader. I have a group of students that love bantering back-and-forth with this KU fan. We always have something fun or funny to say to one another and nearly every day it has something to do with KSU purple, which I call ”Wilson purple”, and the fact that Mr. Fox likes to support his KU red and blue. Earlier this week, I had a Wilson purple shirt and tie on and these two characters wanted a picture with their principal during lunch.
So, when I hear people say schools don’t do anything for kids or they ask the question so what are you do all day? My answer to that is “we make a difference!”
Have a great weekend Wilson Dragons!
WES students recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning during their morning assembly. Last week, WHS Media Club member Joey Lyne filmed the students during their assembly. After submitting the video, the students were on the Tuesday morning broadcast.
Cooper Weinhold, Junior at Wilson High School, was selected in week 2 as VYPE Magazine Player of the Week and was invited to attend the Annual Circle of the Stars Player of the Year Awards Banquet. Guest speaker was Tony Veland, Super Bowl Champion of the Denver Broncos. Also at the banquet was Gene Stephenson, former Wichita State baseball coach, and the MC for the night was Kendra Douglas, KSN sports anchor.
Weinhold appreciates the statewide recognition from Vype and says no individual award comes without the help of his teammates and coaches.
