Barakatun Nisak Bt Mohd Yusof is an Associate Professor and a practising dietitian in the Department of Dietetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Currently, she is a Deputy Dean of Academic (Health Sciences) and Students Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. She is a member of the Research Centre in Nutrition and Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases (NNCD), a research member at Youth Wellbeing and Social Health Laboratory, Institute for Social Science Study, UPM and a member of Diabetes Research Group, FMHS, UPM. She is a practising dietitian at the Metabolic Obesity clinic, HPUPM.
Dr Nisak received her PhD in Dietetics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia before completing the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Joslin Diabetes Centre, Harvard Medical School, in the field of Diabetes Nutrition. She is among the leading researchers on dietetics, diabetes, obesity and Ramadan Nutrition in people with metabolic obesity, type 2 diabetes and women with gestational diabetes.
She has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters, including the Diabetes Nutrition Plan during Ramadan, organized by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). She has been actively involved with multiple stakeholders. She shared her experience with the Ministry of Health, industrial partnership and professional associations in developing diabetes nutrition-related guidelines such as “Clinical Practice Guidelines for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes” and “Diabetes in Pregnancy”. For her contributions in diabetes nutrition, she was awarded the Malaspina International Scholars Award by International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), representing the Southeast Asian region.
