Gluttony

For years, mukbang culture has thrived on different social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Mukbangs are eating shows, originally started in South Korea, posted by content creators where excessively large portions of food are inhaled by the host to make a profit. Back when YouTube was at its prime, many infamous mukbangers such as Nikocado Avocado and Hungry Fatchick went under fire for indulging in such gluttonous acts. Social media users claimed that these eating shows were a waste of money and products and promoted unhealthy eating habits.

Today, TikTok is where mukbangers reside to profit from their absurd eating habits. Even Nikocado Avocado made his way onto the platform in order to stay relevant. However, with this change of a platform medium for mukbang content came a new wave of mukbangers. One of the more popular mukbangers at the moment is a TikToker with the user janemukbangs. She profits off of eating monumental portions of food. Some of the most popular foods she has eaten are a deep-fried Chipotle burrito, 3 Subway foot-long cookies, and an entire box of Crumble Cookies all in one sitting. The most absurd part is that she posts every single day!

Mukbang culture will continue to be a trend for as long as social media exists. Large portions of food featured in thumbnails garner thousands of clicks across the internet. The mukbangers posting the content gain fame and wealth from the views they receive from these eating shows. The creators and the viewers go hand-in-hand, making mukbangs a phenomenon that will never die out.
