ELA 7 Project:
Research, Write, & Create!
Project Overview
This week, you will be conducting research and completing both informational and creative writing based on an author you have read/discussed in class.
Timeline
Project Intro.
Choose an author from the "Resources" section at the bottom of this page.
Read both articles on that document.
Begin to summarize these articles IN YOUR OWN WORDS on a Google doc.
Complete your biography summary paragraph.
Create either a "blackout poem" or a "found poem" from the printed articles you read.
Present your original poem to the class!
Blackout Poetry
Blackout Poetry is created by deconstructing and reconstructing printed words that already exist on a page (in the form of an article, essay, etc.). It's repurposing existing words to bring them new meaning and new life in a very visual way. Blackout poems are usually created by using a marker to "get rid of" words and phrases on an existing page. The "leftover" words are to be read from top to bottom, left to right. This is the "blackout poem." Sometimes the darkened spaces are used to create an image as well, so that the finished poem is both a literary and visual work of art.
Found Poetry
Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them as poetry (a literary equivalent of a collage) by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning.
